Lunch on Saturday 9-07-2016At the entry to the bistro there is a waiter propped on a chair with a cash register and is ready to take your order. On the wall behind her is the menu and after the order is taken another waiter to take the order from the carbon copy to the kitchen. A point of sale system would be great here as the docket would be printed out in the kitchen without the need of a waiter as a paper carrier to the kitchen. The bistro is clean and well kept, suited for a family gathering with wooden chairs with arm rests, carpet and well lit with natural light. Coming from Melbourne I had not experienced the open salad bar and open hot vegetable selection, but this must be the standard in Adelaide as I did note it at another hotel in Glenelg. Not that it is right or wrong just that it is a different way of serving food that bring along different parameters for the kitchen and floor team.I had the chicken salad from the menu, which came to my table in just a few minutes. The salad was freshly made and the chicken was fresh off the grill. The salad consisted of mescalin lettuce, red onion; cashews, grilled mozzarella cheese, cherry tomato, cucumber slices and a light mayo based salad dressing, topped with fried sweet potato.I would have like a bit more personality and acid with the dressing, but the salad was not drowning in it which is always a bonus. The grilled mozzarella cheese I still do not know what that was about. Pieces of cheese, yes, grilled on top of a salad…?There is self service water from the bar, which would be great for the bar and floor team as it requires very little attention during service. The waiters are all dressed in a smart bistro black shirt uniform with the Hotels logo on it. The waiters were working well on this day moving about the bistro attending to all the little things that are happening. The apple pie was home made from pie apple and a little cinnamon, wrapped in puff pastry served with a house made custard. Comprehending all the parameters of a bistro kitchen, this was a good desert and sits well on the menu and I would suggest would be a good seller as the flavor is good and looked good. The toilets were clean as were the outside grounds around the car perk, which both can be a target for litterers, vandals and graffiti.
It is a good consistent place to eat in McLaren Vale. The bistro looks out over a lovely garden so is nice for a Sunday for lunch. The servings are of a good size and well presented.
Used to be good, however the last few visits have left me unimpressed with slow service and less than stellar meals. Actually it’s not too bad, but it used to be much better.
