The Barker underwent a major refurbishment a few years ago and when it reopened it was very chic, beautifully fitted out … and the food and service was frankly awful. The negative reviews written in 2013 and 2014 reflect this and I also had similar experiences and for some time refused to go there. However, this has not been the case for some time now. The service is friendly and attentive and when there in December 2016, we were made to feel very welcome with the waiting staff making sure that we were aware what was on the menu. There was only one table left and even though we were not sure if we were going to dine in , the friendly staff member said that she would reserve it for us ‘just in case you do’.The food was good quality and very generous sizes. The prices are on the high side but these are not ‘pub meals’. Each of the dishes ordered was delivered quickly with a friendly ‘I hope you enjoy your meal’ and all of our group did enjoy them, saying that there was nothing at all negative to say about them. There is a good variety on the menu and if you want a smaller meal there is plenty to choose from. The Barker has a separate bar area as well as the pokies area and there is plenty of room. There is also an outside area on Gawler Street behind glass panels to enjoy a warmer evening or day if you are there for lunch. When we left the staff made a point of saying good bye to us which was great – it was not as though any of us are regulars, with none of us actually living in the district so it was a fantastic customer experience with good quality, generous sized meals to back it up.Summary: Service friendly; food good quality and generous sizes, easy parking at the rear or on Gawler Street (during the day it is only for one hour and there are inspectors!), decor – very polished and upmarket. Worth a try? Definitely – if you have been to the Barker in the past and had a negative experience or have never been there, give it a try and see for yourself. adelaidewriter.com.au

The barker is crap. So rude at the barker. .. bad customer service. .. no one smiles.. and they don’t use tongs to put lemon in your corona… beware…. I can still taste the man germs

Yawn. Pretty bloody average to be honest. Not worth writing anything further in this review.

Not worth the effort or time.. Went to the Barker on Saturday 26/07/14. Very disappointed with the meals. Had a Prawn and Advacado cocktail cocktail which consisted of 3 very small prawns, 3 cos lettuce leaves and non existent mayo followed by a main of Char Grilled Porterhouse with crispy chats, broccolini & herb butter. Asked for rare and it came out medium and as tough as leather and the chats were soggy. Sent it back and received another which was exactly the same. Almost choked on that one. My husband sent his back as well. Definitely not worth the $35 each we were charged. Consequently left hungry which put a damper on our night.

Big let down. Went there on a Monday, it was quite. Ordered 3 meals, sounds easy. But no bread or no cuttlery brought to table. Very dissappointed. Watched the food being brought to table from 3 different doors? Amazing. Not.

Let Down. We took the family to the Barker for dinner. The roast of the day serving was tiny and my husband ended up eating again at home. I had the Angus rump, asked for medium/rare, and got 300g of shoe leather. The kids meals were really ordinary. Pasta and tomato sauce which could have been made at home. Really disappointed as it is our local and we like to support local business. Wont be going back for a while.
