I’ll be quick and short.Service – really good 4/5Food presentation 4/5Taste 2.5/5Ordered tasting platter to start, which was ok. It had arancini which my partner and I always like to eat, but was disappointed with the taste, a little dry and plain. We both had eye fillet, cooked med rare, it wasn’t bad, mine ended being a bit too charred on the edges and dry so a bit hard to eat. I liked the veggies but found it hard to finish my plate as the starter was filling too. For dessert, sadly to say we were disappointed, big fans of panna cotta and creme brulee, but found it dense and heavy and not your typical taste. Creme brulee tasted more like the panna cotta. Not a bad restaurant, but for for the price you pay, we’ve had better.

An amateur establishment at its finest. The sound of non stop telephone hold music greets you along with the sound of the pokies next door. A waitress appears and disappears probably servicing the front bar along with what is supposed to be their premium restaurant. I should of known when I walked through a packed bistro into an empty restaurant that the locals had already learned my lesson. Oysters were ordinary, my steak came out well done after ordering medium rare, promptly sent back and it returned missing the mushroom sauce. Anyone who has ever eaten leftover mash potato will know that this place serves reheated mash at least a day old. Don’t even bother, a waste of my time and money. Don’t let it be yours.
Disappointing. Perhaps we caught them on a bad night, but my parents and I were left disappointed with both the service and food.Wait staff seemed inexperienced. We were seated and provided with drinks menus straight away, but were made to wait twenty minutes before the waiter returned to take the drinks order and provide us with the food menu. Once ordered, the food was very slow in arriving, and part of this time must have involved the plated meals simply waiting to be brought out, as all three steaks we ordered had cooled and were only warm when served. A pity, as the flavours weren’t bad, and the meat was cooked as ordered. Served accompaniments are minimal – chips, mash, or onion rings – so budget on ordering a side dish or two to add some variety and colour to your meal.I must disagree with other reviews praising the ambience – while the decor is modern and the lighting soft, it’s yet another Mt Gambier venue that fails to understand the importance that acoustics play in making for a pleasant dinner experience. Despite two or three unoccupied tables, noise levels were still too high for regular conversation, and we found ourselves needing to lean in close and raise voices in order to hear each other properly. The dining room is one big echo chamber, reflecting sound all over the place, unconducive to a relaxed evening out.Overall, a disappointing experience, and the only visit we’ll be making to 1862. As far as juicy steaks go, ‘The Barn’ still reigns supreme.
EGGsellent breakfast: we had eggs benny and 1862 omlette, well worth waiting time (yes, we had to wait a while:), but it’s extremelly tasty
