First time visited under new ownership, also my last. Forget Spencer Gulf fresh king prawns and think tasteless, frozen Asian prawns. The prawn cocktail contained four small prawns, obviously NOT FRESH and were left after sampling one prawn. The crumbed prawns fared no better. I approached the chef who told me the prawns were SA prawns, but made no comment when I suggested he meantSouth Asian. New owners, take note, by serving up substandard fare you have lost me as a customer and I will not recommend your restaurant to family and friends. Worst seafood meal ever.
When we arrived, we chose to sit upstairs & upon arriving at the top, we weren’t greeted to be shown to our table; after waiting, my sis had to go to the other end of the room to get someone’s attention. The ambience wasn’t so good but that may have been due to one table letting their kids run amok. The service from the waiter was good but not so good from the waitresses. We were offered fresh soft bread & butter to start.I had crab claws for entree & they were very good: two plump, golden balls with a claw handle, served with sweet chilli sauce for dipping. However, they tended to fall apart and I finished eating them with cutlery.Sis had KG whiting x 2 fillets which she thoroughly enjoyed. My husband had salt & pepper mix & I had (grilled) Fruits of the Sea which was a generous serve – unfortunately I couldn’t finish it.All main courses were served with salad & wedges plus we were given a small pot of tartare to share. The tomatoes in the salad were hard, floury & tasteless. I wasn’t keen on the wedges either – they are hand cut but they didn’t ‘cut it’ with me.When we asked for our bill, we were told we had to go downstairs to the front counter to pay – this means that you are checking the bill while others are queueing behind, not giving unflustered time to examine the charges.
Tried and proven Adelaide formula for a Fish Cafe. It’s always fresh and well done seafood – but is really fish and chips in a sit down environment. Always nice to know the seafood is all Australian – with most of it from SA with a few exceptions like the scallops from QLD. Kids meals a good too – with decent piece of fish.Would just love these guys to get their chips right – the funny potato wedges are always a let down (never crispy) and also to whack on a decent craft beer. I remember getting a prancing pony a while back – but no such luck this time. For something that features a lot of local produce — seems like it would be a good fit. Also a decent housemade tartare (it’s not that hard). Frustrating it’s simple things that stop it from being a notch higher.
