Russell’s is a great night out. Everything is fast out, seasonal and fresh. Good for big groups and small. Definitely book. They’re really organised and will get you in for a good meal and out within a couple of hours.
Every time I am down in the willunga area I make sure to book a table here. Bring a bottle of local wine, settle in with family or friends and laugh the night away as we get endless pizza. I demand to sit outside to enjoy the long long afternoons, but no matter where you sit it’s a great eclectic mix of furniture, people and pizza. If you only like Hawaiian pizza or something else generic, go to the pub down the road and stop wasting your time. If you are a foodie then this place is a must. Yes this used to be a place only for the locals, but I don’t think they have lost the charm (unlike other reviews). I think it’s the perfect place for a relaxed evening. And the anchovie pizza is just stooooopidly delicious.
Pizza’s have moved past what you get at Russell’s these days. Whilst originally sold on the unique setting and a gourmet pizza with almost a cult following they are now sadly missing the bit you pay for gourmet pizza. After enjoying many a long weekend journeys to Russell’s my view over the last two visits was confirmed…third time unlucky you could say! Soggy base, no salt in the sauce and an offensive cabana on the meat lovers is not worth the $20+ a pizza, who puts cabana on pizza anyway?! With the influx of young Italians escaping the European financial crisis you are best spending your pizza allowance at one of the new establishments in the city or heading to one of the many good restaurants in the region. If you are still lured by the unique setting and like the idea of carting in your esky to sit around a woodfire, sit back enjoy the atmosphere of the place and have no expectation on the main meal.
Wood oven pizzas minus the Italian artistry and influence. You cannot put cucumber on a pizza! Cucumber and lemon is not a good mix. Quite pricey for what you receive. Yes Italian wood oven pizzas aren’t overly topped with ingredients but I’d have to say these were some of the leanest pizzas I’ve eaten. Best pizza was the meat lovers. Worst would be the yiros pizza which had the cucumber, lemon, garlic sauce, lamb and onion. Not sure if they put the vegetable toppings on after the dough came out the oven because they were always cold toppings. Strange. Dessert was also average. Nice intimate setting but sitting on dirt or in the shed, i couldn’t say it’s worth the drive to Willunga. Much better wood oven pizza to be had in the burbs and CBD.
Have to declare a conflict as place is owned by relatives. That said, it’s a great place for casual dining at a reasonable price! Pides and pizzas cooked in traditional solid fuel ovens. It’s not haut cousins, but it does pizzas better than most. Read the recent poor review, and not sure what they were on about. As i said, it’s not for everyone but I love this sort of dining. Salads were to die for, service impeccable.
Went there on Monday night…. It has been 2 years since we have been and can see how the standard has fallen ! What a disappointment and what a rip-off ! I don’t mind paying for good quality but not the poor quality that was served to us on Monday night…. the usually good lamb pizza was full of stewed lamb with little flavour and the other pizzas weren’t much better ! Won’t be wasting our money on this again !
Such a wicked spot. My wife raved about it for years and I was finally able to make it. So worth it. Take a full esky and empty belly with you!
