We discovered this gem while driving around Tassie. At the moment it doesn’t look like much from the outside, but they are doing renovations at the moment. It will be great when it’s finished. The food is awesome. Husband and wife team with wife making amazing food. Girlfriend had the seafood chowder which she rated as the best she’s had. I had a curried veggie pie with chips and salad. Easily the best pie I’ve had. Service was awesome with hubby a real character. Can’t recommend this place highly enough for a food stop. Lots of parking for caravans etc.
Being an ice cream connoisseur, I must say this is by far the best ice cream my taste buds have had the pleasure of trying! We had the blueberry ice cream sandwich and a raspberry one in a cone. Both incredibly smooth, fresh and flavourful, I’d have to rank this a very high number one on my list, with the second place a tie between Doolishus’ fresh berry ice cream (too many seeds but fresh cream), and Valhalla (smooth but with some fake flavours). Must must must try this! Wish I’d tried the cherry flavour one, definitely recommend the blueberry one!!!
This place is conveniently located next to the main turn-off for the Freycinet peninsula. I visited here twice, as I was so impressed the first time round. The thing to get here is ice cream. And only two types – the berry ice cream, or the cherry ice cream. Both were delicious. The ice cream was so smooth and creamy, but yet filled with so much fresh fruit. At $5, you get a decent size (enough for two to share). They do sell a whole bunch of other foods, including hot food. Notably scallop pies at $12. And weirdly, English Devonshire afternoon tea. But these are all aimed at the gullible tourists who arrive not knowing what Pondering Frog is good for.Go for the ice cream, and maybe get seconds!
Such good value, friendly service, and delicious sweets! I had a lovely black forest milkshake full of blended up fresh cherries with was devine… I wish I could get this back home. My partner had a banana split which was fabulous too. All for $12.
Their homemade berry ice creams are fantastic and the owners are unbelievable friendly and welcoming! I’ve visited this place thrice now and it never fails to disappoint! Tip: Ask the owner why the name’s ‘The Pondering Frog’ and he’ll give you a story to hear!Update July, 2017: Came back with family and my friend, and the friendly owner is still as friendly as ever. They’ve expanded the place significantly and it can get a little crowded on the weekends. Their handmade berry ice cream is still YUM.
Little store on the side of the highway, very friendly staff, greeted by a very friendly male staff the moment we were walking close to the front door, very amazing and friendly service, he even recommended some sights we should stop by. Highly recommended to stop by on your way to national park on the east coast.
So on the way to Bay of Fires we stopped in for scones as The Pondering Frog was highly recommended. The staff were uber friendly and so we ordered away. We’ve been searching for the best scones in Tassie so have been quite the connoisseur – so when this warm, dry but soft scone came out we instantly knew it was yesterday’s reheated. Yummy jam and cream but not keen on the scone.
