A bit off their game today.. burger so burnt it’s not edible. Really they shouldn’t have served this, just cook another one.. Everything else is alright though. Nice environment.
Needed a quick lunch the other day so called in to the Hope & Anchor. They have several $10 meals which are great value. I went for the chicken burger which was really tasty and came with very crunchy chips. Not a bad range of beers and cider on tap. Free pool as well!
This should perhaps be a 1.0 but we didn’t stay long enough to actually order, so who knows how good the food is. What a shocking amateurish rabble they were though. Watching the.chaos was mildly amusing until we were left with our little boy without being served or acknowledged for 30 minutes. Needles to say, we had to leave and get fish and chips from the harbour front.
Restaurant at Hope & Anchor was on our Entertainment card, so thought it worthwhile to check out. Downstairs was full, so we sat in one of the upstairs rooms, themed with horns and stag heads. With a window open and slight breeze, it made for a great space to dine, with only one other table occupied. While they dithered over menu choices, we ordered quickly and did not have to wait too long for our mains. Mine was beef cheeks with red wine jus, mash, mixed greens & sweet potato chips on top. Lots of meat and greens, with just the right amount of jus. The meat was tender & tasty. My partner had a pork cutlet with apple on sweet potato mash and greens. A good sized serving and also delicious. He had a Tasmanian cider from Pagan Cider – cherry & apple – which he really liked.
Visiting Hobart I wanted to experience a meal in Australia’s oldest licensed pub (1807) My calamari was okay… Nothing to write home about. But disappointed that the bar choose to have Somersby Cider on tap and not a local Tassie one. Also, bar can get incredibly noisy and hard to get a table after 7pm. The TV ruined it for me too- a local musician was playing but the TV (with footy) was on behind her- a bit of an insult!
We had tickets to catch a show at the Theatre Royal, so needed somewhere to eat that would be quick and delicious. Being a newbie to Hobart, thankfully friends we were visiting suggested we head to the Hope & Anchor – brilliant suggestion. This pub is the oldest licensed hotel in Australia … so our lovely waitress told us … and it was fabulous. There are a variety of rooms over two stories of the hotel to eat in and we found ourselves up on the second floor. The place is wonderfully quirky, filled with antiques and all sorts of bits and bobs to entertain the eye. I popped my head into most of the rooms and the decore throughout was delightful. Then there was the service – our waitress was a gem – warm, friendly and full of local knowledge and charm. She absolutely made our night. To the menu – full of good pub grub – all the standards you come to expect and at great prices – what you want in a pub. Between the four of us we ended up choosing the chicken parmi (this was enormous – falling off the plate – you can choose to get a half size off the bar menu – do so unless you are starving); fish and chips, salt and pepper calamari and seafood chowder for me.I love seafood chowder and don’t seem to find it too often on the menus of the places I frequent. I had an amazing one in the US many years ago and that has been a bit of a benchmark for me – well the H&A surpassed that benchmark. A cob loaf filled with the most deliciously creamy and thick chowder – lots of prawns, fish and scallops – a very generous serve, couldn’t finish off the last three mouth fulls. My three table mates also thoroughly enjoyed their choices. A cider for me, a beer for the bloke and a bottle of wine for the two lovely ladies and we were very happy with everything – all out in good time with no rush for the theatre. If you are in Hobart – come here – its a piece of history AND they do good food! Can’t go wrong really.
On a recent trip to Hobart my partner and I had the pleasure of visiting Australia’s ‘oldest’ pub which was luckily quite close to our hotel. The Hope and Anchor is a warm and welcoming old style pub with generous, good quality food. My steak was cooked perfectly, the wine list was decent and the staff were friendly. Live music on a Wednesday night was also a bonus. I would eagerly recommend this place to anyone in Hobart after a decent, no-nonsense counter meal in a cosy setting.
