This is the best Chinese restaurant in Hobart. It’s obviously not up to Sydney standards of Chinese, but it’s solid and more or less authentic and consistently delicious.
Three of us dined at Written on Tea in Bathurst St, Hobart on 29 Dec 2016. Pleased to see it was BYO as we took our own wine. I think corkage is about $3. We started with spring rolls, hot and crunchy with a sweet chilli sauce. Our starters included steamed pork dumplings with a chilli sauce on the side. All delicious. For mains we shared three dishes … dry-fried French beans with minced pork and spicy sauce. Lovely textures and flavours. We had wanted to order the stir fried kai-lan in ginger sauce … the waitress explained they did not have fresh kai-lan that day. She suggested bok choy and we also requested a ginger and garlic sauce. It was fresh with a bit of crunch and the sauce worked well. Our third shared dish was stir fried rice noodles with pickled bamboo shoot and sliced chicken. It tasted fresh and was a good contrast to the other two dishes. We also shared some steamed rice. The food was interesting and varied, the wait staff were friendly. It was a short walk from the CBD and docks. It was quiet the night we dined, but there were about three other tables of walk-ins, like us, before we left. Would happily dine there again.
Probably the worst Chinese i have eaten. Menu said ‘Sauted Chicken with chili’ and when it arrived it was just chopped up chicken ends of leg bones and wing bits. Just awful and talk about overkill with onions and very greasy. Also ordered ‘Pork Belly with chili’ and there was more onion than pork and no real flavour.
Some weird combination is going on at this restaurant. I have never eaten eggplant with mince made with iceberg lettuce and leek before. To me the dishes just weren’t authentic. The four-season-beans (long beans stir fried with with mince in a spicy sauce was really stringy. There were only two waitresses on a Friday night which made the service really slow.
Average Chinese restaurant – worth a visit if you’re craving decently priced non-takeaway style Chinese food. Just be warned – don’t expect much with the service. Most memorable dishes were the spicy fish and stir fried pork.Located on along the shopping/food strip of Sandy Bay Road, this restaurant is well positioned – targeting tourists, locals, and international students alike.
Wurst restaurant ever
Bad bad. Bad service, unfriendly staff and waited for over an hour for our meal. Won’t be back! There must be better restaurants with much better service in Hobart. Very unappreciative of their customers. This place won’t last long if they keep this attitude. Have a great day everyone!
