We stayed at Cradle Mountain for 2 nights and had room service, buffet breakfast and ala carte dinner at their Altitude restaurant. The food here was hit and miss. The Soup of the Day which was pumpkin soup did not taste like pumpkin soup at all. I could make better pumpkin soup at home. The Chargrilled porterhouse was however cooked beautifully. I went for the Hot Rock experience – apparently meals is cooked on 400’C volcanic rock. I ordered the Tasmanian seafood tasting plate for the hot rock experience. The food portion is quite generous and the seafood is quite fresh. The tasting platter also came with sides of vegetable and potatoes (chips or baked).Service could be improved as this was my first hot rock experience, I wasn’t sure how to start, it will be good if the waiter can explain it to me. My partner ordered the gnocchi which was just alright. Given there are not much options around Cradle Mountain, this is not a bad place to dine.
Ate at the Altitude Restaurant in the hotel. They have an a la carte section and a buffet section ($48 for dinner adults).Their signature dish is a trio of meats (beef, lamb, and wallaby) from local producers. Served raw on your table, and you cook yourself on hot lava stones ($39). It sounds exciting, but in theory the meat comes out either undercooked or overcooked, and not well seasoned.A better dish was what I had, which was the porterhouse steak ($34) from a nearby farm on Mt Roland. It was grilled pretty well, and quite tasty. However, the mash that it was served it was very watery, and the veg side was average.Overall, an OK meal. But I guess you can’t be picky with such few choices for dining at Cradle Mountain.
We are staying one night and decided to splurge on the restaurant.Very glad we did.The food was excellent.I was very impressed that they asked how I wanted my lamb cooked, however it arrived a little overdone.Having said that, it was so delicious I really didn’t care.Excellent service, beautiful hotel.
We arrived late on a Monday night in winter where they are having renovations and we were told that because we are not staying with them we can’t be served just incase their patrons decide they would like to dine. The place was practically empty, they could have easily taken us but instead have lost 2 very hungry foodies.
Dinner at the Grey Gum restaurant was interesting – I would recommend getting the tasting platters where you can cook over a hot stone/rock (most tables got them as well). The pork loin that I had was a bit dry and small in portion size. There is another dinner option available on site (buffet at Quoll’s Casual Dining), which costs $38pp. The sample menu consisted of a dozen items like soup, pork belly, and chicken – this didn’t really sound appealing nor worth the price, hence we opted for the a la carte menu at Grey Gum. The reception recommends making bookings beforehand as the restaurants are open for certain hours.
Came for buffet called Quolls, there is also a part called grey gum which is more fine dining. $38 for buffet,a little expensive for what you get. Options are limited and the stand out was the salmon. They also had a whole trout,a chicken dish which barely had any chicken in it. The Lentils were in the dressing you normally have with bean salad, not bad. Mushroom salad was ok too. They also has a cheese platter and dessert, some of it I’m sure is five my Sara Lea. They had this champagne jelly which was too strong for me. Service was good and friendly, and there is a view into the greenery. There is limited options eating out at Cradle Mountain, this is a ok but expensive option
Quolls- Quite expensive $38 for a Buffett, each Not all was terrible, Quality was not there, just a cost saving option for dinner.Dessert was the biggest fail, just packet rubbish. A fresh cream /fruit or Pavlova option would of been nicer. At this stage would not return.Grey gum restaurant -Pro- presented well, friendly staff, nice setting and Con- food balance of flavours just not there. Service was professional however just a lack of detail training, no drinks replaced, no plates removed promptly. We ordered chicken stuffed with spinach ,lamb rack and a side of Veggies for our child. Chicken was cooked fine, the mash was overpowered with Overused salt and butter, small portions.Lamb was good , flavour good just very small.Side Vegies consisted of a bowl of cooked carrots they tried to sell to me for $9!No thanks I said id pay only $4 no corn, broccoli etc like I ordered. The dessert – both fail Passion fruit pannacotta and chocolate cake. No flavour at all in pannacotta plus I had a heap of hard gelatine through mine. The Raspberry coulis was very bitter, just needed some icing sugar to dust off. Plus they used sliced grapes ???Choc cake was dry and not inviting.
