Hubby and I were staying at Peppers Launceston recently, and wanted a quick dinner, so we headed downstairs to this next-door restaurant. Its a very large space, so I can only assume that they expect a lot of locals all at once:=) We were there on a Thursday night, quite early around 6 pm. There were a couple of other tables with diners, but it stayed fairly quiet while we ate.Like many eating places these days, you have to order at the counter, and they bring it to your table when ready. Service was friendly and prompt though they did get our drink order mixed up (but that was quickly solved). I started with a glass of Joseph Chromy ros ($8), a Tassie label, which was crisp and delicious. Hubby had a pear cider ($7.50), which he said was refreshing and nice.He then chose battered flake and chips ($16), while I had salt and pepper calamari salad ($23.50). Perhaps thats a tad expensive for a calamari salad? Though it was really tasty, with the calamari done in a salt and pepper tempura batter, and the whole dish was tangy and fresh. I would have liked a bit more salad than just some leaves and a few halves of cherry tomato and a bit of onion. We also paid $1.50 for tartare sauce which I think is a bit mean considering the prices.Hubby said the flake was perfect; crisp not oily, perfectly cooked and in a good batter. He had a garden salad with it ($11), which had the same ingredients as my salad, but with a bit of green capsicum and cucumber thrown in. He would have liked a bit more dressing, with a bit more flavour. Me too! Chips were plentiful, crispy outside and soft inside. They came in a large paper cone (with the fish), which hubby thought was a great idea as it keeps them warm. My comment was that the chips actually tasted like potato which is a rarity, and appreciated by us. The sauce came in a little tub, which we felt looked a bit cheap, and sadly I dont think it was housemade. All up, we had a nice meal; not too expensive (I think people who complain bitterly about the prices forget that you are paying for the staff and utilities etc not just the food.) We enjoyed our dinner here, and would go back again if we lived in Launceston. Hubby said to say that the view is good too, with the river behind us. sherryspickings.blogspot.com
