What…?. Someone told me they serve food here.I’d give it a 10/10 because that made me laugh. I don’t even know what the hell that was but no. Please stop.

Worst in Tasmania?. Quite possibly the worst Asian restaurant in Tasmania.Expect to walk into an almost empty restaurant and be greeted by a menu with mind boggling prices, on par with Me Wah.Now even with these prices, don’t bother comparing this place with Me Wah, or even with Duc’s Take Away for that matter. The food here has quite a cheap, dated feel, and its greasy and downright awful nature is similar to what you would expect for $7-12 at a food court. You’ve been warned!

After reading the orginal review of this restaurant, I was a little apprehensive about eating here. However, being a Sunday night in Hobart, and not being a local, I didn’t know where else to go to fulfil my hankering for Chinese food. I was hesitant after peeking into the place and only seeing the serving staff sitting at the tables, however I was wrong!Yes, the decor is tacky, but I think it’s fitting. Anyone who has been to Asia will know that eateries are not decked out with antique looking furniture, but instead bright lanterns and cheesy crockery. Their menu features a good choice of entrees (including soups), meat & veggie dishes, rice & noodle options, as well as some ‘Australian’ options (such as steak). At the end of the menu, they have encouraged patrons to request dishes they desire but are not on the menu. Talk about flexibility! So we ordered the dim sims (4 pieces) and fried wontons (6 pieces) to start, and they were super yummy. Served with a sweet & sour/sticky ginger sauce, we were ready for the main. Lemon chicken with fried rice (that had just about everything – I’m sure they would have added the kitchen sink if it fitted on the plate). No complaints, the meat dish was the same as you would get elsewhere, and the rice was absolutely lovely. Not greasy with a generous helping of the ‘special’ bits, my only regret was not ordering a larger plate. And finally, dessert. While I did not partake, my partner assures me that his banana fritter was amazing, super crunchy, not soggy, with ice cream, whipped cream, banana topping, a marshmallow and a wafer stick. All this with a couple of drinks came to a measly $55. If you are in the mood for a good, cheap dinner, I highly recommend Har Wee Yee.

Oh my…. Har Wee Yee, once known as one of the best places to get some Chinese into you, has certainly fallen from grace. Their tacky 1970s Australian Chinese food is gluggy, grisly and generally awful. My family and I visited here after many many years of it being out of our minds. It has changed ownership a few times and is definitely not worth any amount of money. Do yourself a favour and head further into Hobart city for a more authentic Chinese meal than stopping here!Needs a full makeover, complete with a new chef!
