Pho Chu Thai has been open for over a year now. Its one of the Vietnamese restaurants on Victoria Street that is often overlooked which is a shame. I come here a lot with family and friends because honestly, the standard is up to par with most of the restaurants on the same street. The price is a tad cheaper too. I find this place makes a fantastic fried flounder with spicy salt and pepper and you cant go wrong with the fried quail. Maybe its the interior design thats putting people off? The lighting is dim with minimal decorations and theres a big, long mirror that covers one side of the wall. Service is pretty much what you can expect from Vietnamese restaurants in Melbourne – so so. Other than that, I cant really fault this place. Come here for Vietnamese food!

With the unexpected (and very sad) closure of Thy Thy, I was on the hunt for the next best broken rice in Richmond, along the semi-decimated strip of Victoria Street.

I ordered the Special Grilled Pork Broken Rice as a takeaway. It was packed sturdily which made its transport home uneventful.

The broken rice was well cooked. The pickled vegetables were crunchy and not too sour – my taste buds had a good time. The star of the dish was the grilled pork which was tender and tasty. Everything tasted fresh and service was friendly enough (though slightly robotic).

So while I’m still pining for Thy Thy’s broken rice special, Pho Chu Thai’s version is an okay replacement for now…..

One of the newer Vietnamese restaurant along Victoria St. They served pho and variety of Chinese dishes. The pho is pretty average, the broth was tasty but not too special. The dry noodles were better and tastier. The rice noodles are cooked nicely and the toppings they use complement each other. Food took a while to come out though.
