One of the few places at Melbourne that do the bahn knot the way I like ( these are similar to the Vietnamese pancakes but smaller and have small shrimps in the middle) . As these are essentially mini savoury coconut pancakes I like them served with a side of coconut milk with the fish sauce. The soup noodles here are also quite good but I mainly would only come here for the bahn knot
On my ongoing quest to discover the best broken rice (after the untimely demise of the great Thy Thy) along the semi decimated Victoria Street in Richmond, I decided to give Thanh Nga Nine a try.
Long story short, while it was not bad and ticked most of the boxes, it still fell short of a perfect score.
The broken rice was of a generous amount. I appreciated the salads being packed separately and the soup was an unexpected but welcome surprise. Unfortunately, the pork was dry, hard and chewy – this was the main issue I had with the dish.
Otherwise, the service was exceptionally friendly and warm. Tea was offered while I waited for my takeaway order to be prepared.
My quest continues……..
Ordered the dropped noodles with shredded pork served with coconut milk and fish sauce which was really interesting. First time I’ve had something that has coconut milk and fish sauce mixed together. The coconut milk was overpowering so not much fish sauce taste there afterwards, so the noodles were a bit sweet and salty.
Also ordered the combination broken rice with pork chop, pork loaf, shredded pork, fried egg, cucumber and beansprouts, fish sauce and a side soup. The pork chop was ok, can do with stronger flavours, the pork loaf was the first time i’ve had it in that form, and it tasted ok, but a bit salty.
A lovely and clean space that offered great hospitality. The food was ok, however not as great as some of its competitors down Victoria St. Serving size vs price was fair.
