Loved, loved, LOVED THIS PLACE.The recently renovated cellar door restaurant was rustic yet modern, and had a great farm house feel. The staff were friendly and tentative, but the food really was the shining star!We had the mushroom arancini and pumpkin frittata to start, which were both delicious and would definitely reorder – we even bought the tomato chutney it came with for home. For mains we got the Meredith goats cheese tart with pear and walnut salad, and the seared eye fillet with garlic and herb potatoes and caramelised onion herb butter. The eye fillet, my fried event said was the best she’d ever had!Definitely finish with dessert; we had the sticky date pudding with butterscotch sauce and ice cream – the perfect way to end the experience. All this was paired with matching wines, that also went down an absolute treat!Special shout out to Matthew who went through our wine tasting with us at the cellar door; a very passionate, friendly and knowledgable manager! Thanks for getting us excited to come back, even before leaving the venue!Only an hour and a half up the Hume Hwy from Melbourne, the Strathbogie Ranges are a seriously underrated wine region. Can’t wait to return!
It was overall a pleasant though unspectacular meal. The seasonal menu was predictably your standard Modern Australian cuisine, though without too much creativity or twists.Fortunately, the menu pairs nice enough with a good range of wines made in house. For a relaxing afternoon away from the hustle and bustle of the city, Fowles Wines is worth stopping by.
Fo0die dined as a guest of Fowles Wine and as such, the rating does not give any consideration to customer service. We escaped Melbourne on a Sunday and drove 90 minutes North East to explore a wine region that we did not even know existed. The recently renovated Fowles Wine is located in Avenel in the Strathbogie Ranges and is located just off the Hume Freeway.
*Rating 4.5 StarsDid you know you can escape the city and unwind in wine country, just 90 mins north of Melbourne? The Strathbogie Ranges are perfect for cool climate wines and award winning Fowles is the jewel in the crown. Featuring a gorgeous, newly renovated cellar door with tapas and wine tasting, the team are extremely passionate about the wine that they create. They’re equally passionate about the food in their stunning farm to table restaurant – with a sustainable ethos and locally or home grown meat and veggies. There’s also a beautiful event space and a shady courtyard where you can sip the afternoon away while the kids tire themselves out in the play area!We fell in love with the decor – the Cellar door is designed to feel like a huge rustic shed, styled with stunning up-cycled wood tables and other materials from the Victorian countryside. It’s all been beautifully thought out with incredible attention to detail and we totally felt like we were on a country escape, miles from anywhere. Take a moment to sit by the fire in a custom built sofa resembling bales of wool, and check out the rustic laundry sinks re-purposed for the bathrooms. We were invited down for lunch and the food was amazing – fresh and full of flavour. Continuing the authentic Victorian country theme, the focus in the kitchen is on exceptional local and seasonal produce. The menu is designed to match their wines created to complement the rich intense flavours of wild game dishes, and they offer a range of dishes from light snacks and grazing plates through to rich hearty game options. Make sure you check out the dessert tasting plate! We spent the afternoon tasting wines and enjoying the view stretching out over the herb garden and across the ranges. Open every day of the week this should definitely be on your Melbourne to do list!*updated Jan 2020*
Just 90 minutes from Melbourne, Fowles Wine in the Strathbogie Ranges, has just gone through a facelift. A newly renovated cellar door modelled on the quintessential Aussie shed and using upcycled materials has opened with everything from the design through to the menu capturing the essence of the Australian landscape, yet with a modern edge.
