We decided on Tang for lunch after running an errand in the area last Saturday, despite having being told by a friend who used to live in Balaclava that the food here isnt great.
I had the Shredded Pork with Preserved Vegetables Rice Noodle Soup (on their Chefs Specials board) and thought it was tasty. The broth was simple, yet the tender and flavoursome pork strips brought the whole dish together.
My partners Taiwanese Braised Beef Noodles faired well. The beef brisket was quite tender and we could taste the medley of dried spice that it was braised in.
We also shared a portion of Wontons in Chilli Oil, vegetarian spring rolls and xiaolongbao.
Whilst the wonton filling was light and fluffy, I expected a more generous amount of chilli oil with this dish instead of just small dollops of it all over the wontons. However, I must say that the chilli oil was pretty good.
The xiaolongbao tasted decent, but the skin was a tad too thick (to me, a no-no for a dish thats supposed to be delicate).
The spring rolls had a hearty and tasty filling, accompanied by a nice sweet and slightly tangy dipping sauce.
Service here was a bit lacklustre. Whilst the lady at the counter was nice, the waiter who served us seemed rather unenthusiastic. He forgot about the Fanta I ordered even though we were the only other table apart from another sole diner who was already eating. Our food also took quite a while to arrive.
Unfortunately I cannot comment on their dumplings as we didnt have any that day, but what we had surpassed our expectations (taking into consideration my friends prior warning/opinion).
Overall, it was a rather satisfying lunch, food wise.
By far the best dumplings in the world , the food is pretty reasonable, hospitality is great and all the food offered in the menu is very authentic.
