Returning customer having tried all vegetarian (also vegan) meals. Food is so tasty and filling. The tasting plate was great. Food is reasonably priced. Persian vegan cake was very nice.

We were passing through Ballarat and decided to have dinner at Cafe Merkama. There was no need to book but after we arrived at 6.45 pm the cafe began to fill up with patrons. I am guessing that the staff member providing the table service is also the owner. He was very friendly and helpful. Service was a little slow as he was the only server in sight. A small cup of warm ginger tea was provided immediately together with the menu. We chose the tasting platter for two including a meat selection of goat and lamb. The meat dishes were very tasty, particularly the goat. The accompany serves of vegetables including lentils, beetroot, spinach were also very tasty. The bread was interesting – soft with a slight sour taste to it – not to my liking on its own but went well with the rest of the meal. The platter for 2 was very filling but we decided we must try the love cake. It was great but super sweet and we were glad of the coffee we had ordered. The coffee was rather stronger than we would have liked – it was explained to us that the machine had malfunctioned to produce the strong coffee. I did not mind as I still had a 2 hour night time drive to get home to Melbourne. But I think in other circumstances it would have been better if the server had provided an alternative. Overall, we enjoyed our experience – something quite different.

Probably the best place I’ve eaten in Ballarat to be honest. Really friendly service, really good food, plus they’re vegan friendly. The vegan love cake is a must while you’re here!

The man there does an amazing job considering its only him and he has no help from anyone else. It’s a great experience if you are looking for something humble and different.

This is a very understated venue and I suspect, a somewhat hidden dining gem in Ballarat.
Friendly service and a simple menu (although I had no idea what to expect taste wise).
We opted for the tasting selection (8 veggie and 2 meat dishes). Absolutely blown away by the flavours !! An absolute delight with every mouthful!
We backed this up with Persian Love Cake for desert. Simply exquisite!!!
Check this place out… you won’t be disappointed!

Had not eaten this cuisine for 10 years since i was in Ethiopia. However i remember the bread was thin and yummy. The bread at Merkama was very different to what is served in Addis. It was thicker and more like a layer from a cake, very strange.
Otherwise food was ok, lamb was a bit dry, but goat was much tastier. The sample tasting plate for$20 a head was a good choice

We arrived hangry and at a busy time and we were annoyed we had to wait a really long time. When the food came out I was blown away! Totally worth the wait. The cake was amazing! I live two hours away but i am going back this weekend just to take my gluten free/vegan friend here.
