What a gem in Ballarat! In this lovely old building, hids this wonderful restaurant. The impression when we first arrived, it was amazing. A proper restaurant set up and outstanding service. All the wait staffs are very attentive and had very good recommendation of all the food choice.

We were told about the duck pate parfait with tarragon mustard and sour cherries as the special entree of the day. If you have a chance to try it, please order it. The soft velvety of the pate matches so well with the mustard and cherry, it is divine.

We then had the fish of the day, King Whiting, crumbed, served with capers and pickle. The fish is moist but the crumb stay crunchy all the way to the last bite.

We also had the Black and White Linguine Alla Marinara. I don’t know what happen to the other review a few months back for this place. But this pasta is one of the best I had in all over Victoria. Generally it is not the amount of shellfish you have on the dish, it is normally the fish part that easily ruin the whole thing. I can tell you, this dish is as good as it can get.

Lastly with dessert, the Apple trifle and the cheese platter are excellent. What a great way to finish the menu.

Highly recommended to come to this place for menu if you happen to be in Ballarat. The food, the service are this good. I am definitely marking this to be one of my favourite place.

Beautiful old hotel with exceptional dishes if you choose wisely!

Our table had the slow roast lamb for 2 which is a must if you love tender meat and can certainly fill more than 2 people! The mushroom pithivier was another flavour packed dish, I ordered the spaghetti with crab with a side of food envy as it lacked in chilli. The lemon tart was a stand out and finished our night pleasantly.

Came up from Melbourne to take my mum to dinner at Craigs Royal Hotel. Had big expectations of both food and atmosphere. Its a nice looking place, but thats all thats going for it. Food was sub-par. Ordered the spaghetti marinara – it was dry, bland, salty, and a tiny portion size – 4 mussels in a $33 dish! My mother ordered the risotto. It resembled a runny cow pat with barely any aborio. Spent $200 on dinner. We walked away hungry and a tad annoyed. Waiters were borderline strange – staff clearly arent enjoying themselves – management look to be autocrats. Waiters were trying to upsell at every step of the meal oh theres a long queue in the kitchen how about you order a (really expensive) charcuterie platter?. Super uncomfortable and clunky service. Not a refined experience – not up to scratch.

Eaten here twice and its a must dinning experience at least once. Everything from the setting to the service was exceptional. Food was amazing and well seasoned, with great flavour combinations, presentation inviting and you could see a lot of thought and care had gone into the food and all aspects of the restaurant.

Firstly the wait staff were very attentive from when we first walked in. Pleasantly surprised by the menu! The bread delivered to our table was fresh, still warm and so soft in the middle! Love the bread! Chose the special cheese entree which had fantastic flavours including poached pear! Yumm! It was a big serving of cheese so I recommend sharing that between two. Was highly recommended the Hopkins River Porterhouse which was again fantastic flavours, the blue cheese marinade was so delicious – salty and delicious. My partner said it was the best steak hed ever had. Both the bread, entree and main were enough to gratefully fill us. Loved the atmosphere and food was special! Some different flavours which are definitely worth a try!

This is a very stylish old-world restaurant. Service is great – Chris provided particularly good table service but all the staff were friendly and helpful. The dinner menu has a reasonable diversity of choices. But we chose 2 similar starters – ocean trout and Yarra Valley caviar. Both were delicious. For mains, we chose the slow cooked lamb for 2 which was superb but far too big for two people. Fortunately the staff packed up the leftover meat for us to take with us. The wine list is extensive and we chose an excellent Tatiarra shiraz. There was no room for dessert! Overall a very enjoyable dining experience.

Managed to grab a table here without a booking on a Sat night, sooo glad we did. Service was patchy but mostly friendly enough, but the food was great. Mushroom Pithivier was sublime and beautifully presented, as was the John Dory with Jerusalem Artichokes. Poached quince with honeycomb, soft chocolate and gingerbread was the highlight though! The desconstructed rhubarb cheesecake was pretty good too! Will def head back to try other plates of deliciousness at this place, great excuse to visit Ballarat!
