I was in town from Melbourne and read that Lola was the new kid on the block, and the menu sounded very appealing.My entree of duck raviolo was full of tender, flavoursome shredded duck and served in a rich mushroom and truffle veloute (could’ve eaten a bowl of that alone) with delicate slices of blanched cauliflower. My main was the lamb shoulder with olives and caramelised yoghurt. These were bold flavours but with the rich meat, which was tender and the fat beautifully rendered, they helped balance it. Finally I enjoyed a mandarin mille feuille, served with a mandarin gel, fresh mandarin and blood orange, a quinelle of ice cream and freeze dried mandarin. It was a beautiful celebration of this in-season citrus.The service was warm and friendly, although lacked the polish you might get in an equivalent restaurant in Melbourne, and the ambience to me feels more French Riviera than cold Ballarat, but I’d come back for the food and wine for sure.
