Unique space and time. Time does not run as usual in this place; time stopped by and left pieces of each decade behind. To call it a cafe would be a misnomer, there is so much more to discover behind the large doors of this old church building.
Retro treasures and clothes for sale, books and vinyl records a plenty, and some authentic Irish fare. The coffee is also Melbourne-quality served in mugs that tout some of the classic titles from penguin books.
The building has history as most places in Ballarat do, but the minute you walk into the front of the church, with the roaring Coonara wood fire and modular lounge, and long kitchen tables with mix and match chairs you feel as though you’ve stepped into someone home. Noreen and Fidelma, come out from behind the kitchen bench, with their in-retro-style clothing to say hello they welcome you in their lilting Irish accents.
The food is simply stunning. Irish stew that warms you through, soups that are full of flavour, hearty and warming, beautiful breakfasts and puffy crispy flaky pastry on the home made Guinness pie and sausage rolls.
Another much talked about item from this cafe is the home made lemonade. A bottle delivered to the table will be irresistible to young and old alike!
Its worth heading to the south side of Ballarat for this treasure trove of knick-knacks and hearty Irish food. Check out the Facebook page for up to date info on special ‘night’ events.
Brilliant coffee, fantastic service, delicious home made food, an open fireplace, what more could you want? Highly recommend a visit to The Church Retro Cafe!
Authentic Irish Food and great coffee in a fantastic atmosphere. I’ve spent 20 years in Australia trying to find authentic Irish food and finally I’ve found a place has it. It also has excellent coffee all served in a quirky, environment packed full of vintage treasures and great books.
They also have a great Irish music session once a month. Best session I’ve attended in Australia – musicians, singers, poets and story-tellers of all ages, shapes, and makes. Irish Stew washed down with a few pints of Guinness – what more could you ask for.
Lukewarm,watery takeaway coffee – you’ve lost us!!
Delicious and quirky. Delicious home cooked food, with an Irish touch. Fantastically friendly staff.
Quirky deco, has to be seen to be believed!!!
Some of the nicest people around… You want authentic home food in a great relaxed atmosphere The Church Retro Cafe is the place. It’s easy to keep coming back for great food, the best lemonade and some good laughs.
Loved the funky decor in this converted church! Had a delicious home made soup with Guinness bread, perfect lunch to keep me going for the afternoon! Was charmed by two friendly and somewhat eccentric Irish ladies who could not do enough for me! Coffee here is definitely the best I’ve had outside of Melbourne! There is so much to look at in this cafe with all sorts of vintage clothing and ofher items available to buy also! This place is definitely worth stopping at for a look – it’s like no other place I’ve been before!
