When entering this store I was under no false impression that this was the original city-wide famous Glick’s and knew it was a separate outlet. But I did assume there would be actual bagels (heavy, doughy, bagely) rather than just regular bread in the shape of a bagel (light, dry, bready). But maybe that’s how people like their bagels around here?
I feel that this Glick’s doesn’t have the same vibe as their traditional ones in the bagel belt (no pun intended). I would avoid the biscuits here as they look like they have sat there for months on end.
Bagel kings. The Sunday stay at home brunch consists of heading to Glicks and grabbing 6-8 bagels with some dips. They have been around for 50 years and have multiple store’s, there is a reason why!
If you go to Glick’s what are you purchasing? Challah? Gefilte fish? Maybe, but while I was tempted, as a family, what we went with, were bagels – five of them, four poppy seed – had to be done, and one onion bagel. Fillings too will come as no surprise, smoked salmon bagel with cream cheese, capers and onion. In the case of one child, he had the ‘smoked salmon bagel without the smoked salmon’ and The Lovely Man chose egg mix and a salmon pattie (warmed in the microwave) in his Onion Bagel. He’s not really a ‘bagel person’, but these are Glick’s Bagels – so he ate with a smile on his face. They really are the best bagels, particularly if, like me, you adore bagels but most days only have access to the packets at the supermarket. Glick’s’ version are still dense but they’re also light, not brick-like – it really is quite a magical talent to do that.  My score would have been higher, but for our smoked salmon bagels (and the one without salmon) there was just far too much onion. We were fine with the capers (they’re not the Lilliput version I usually side with), the cream cheese too, it was good salmon – all of that fine, but the balance was wrong. I’d asked for a ‘small amount’ of onion, but I think we got an equal quantity to the salmon. Pity. I’d not want to miss out on these bagels, so next time I’d just really, really emphasise a little onion.
Fresh bread and fresh ingredients! The onion bagel is fantastic, and the Rye bread is also sensational! Definitely an above average sandwich, with an extensive range of fillings. The staff are always smiley and friendly! The eggplant with beetroot relish is my personal favourite! A good place to grab a quick bite or take away lunch!
