Run and owned by two siblings who hail from Malaysia, this humble eatery has come a long way from when they first started.
Dont let its plain facade fool you from the outside. They serve the most authentic nasi kandar and mi goreng in and around Melbourne by far.
Even back when Kayu Nasi Kandar, Boxhill existed years ago, they failed to live up to my expectations, but these guys here have certainly presented their culinary passion and true Malaysian flavours on the plate.
Their menu is concise and simple, even more so when they first started: with only nasi kandar and plain roti on offer during lunch time whilst the mi goreng was only available at night. Being mainly lunchers, that didnt bother us because their nasi kandar had already won us over back then.
At least now, the mi goreng is available all day and theres more variations of roti and Bain-Marie selections available.
The nasi kandar is still as good, but I must say I am now hooked onto their mi goreng after finally having the chance to try it yesterday. Their teh tarik has certainly improved, with a stronger tea note this time round.
The ambience is exactly how one would find themselves in a typical mamak shop in Malaysia – simple, casual, and nothing fancy. Just the way it should be.
As much as they are successful now, they have maintained the humbleness in them. Kudos!
A slight warning though: if you choose to dine in, you would most likely end up having your clothes smelling like the venue. But with such authentic and great tasting food, who cares right? We dont.
Ugly delicious is what I will say when it comes to MKR food. Dont be deceived by the appearance of their shop. Their food are packed with wholesome flavours that reminds me of home. For me mee goreng stood out the most its spicy, smokey flavours which reminds me of home. Hideous it looks, thats one plate of happiness for me.
*disclaimer – the restaurant is perfumed with aromas of a hawker stall like in Malaysia or Singapore. Wear something daggy or please dont bring your first date there unless you dont want to impress
Like all great Malaysian eateries, the proof is in the food and not the ambience. The restaurant is simple and beside a car wash. It’s basic chairs and tables.
However, the food – omg, so good. I went previously did nasi kandar and I was so full the food was great.
I’ve been back and had the mee mamak- the portion is huge and passable. Not as great as I hoped however still good.
I really enjoyed it here. Will be back soon.
