10 Reviews on “Dolan Uyghur Cuisine”
I have been to Dolan city branch as well as Springvale branch and both were delicious. As a bunch of my friends have never tried Urghur cuisine, I thought why not go to Box Hill since its quite central to where we all lived in the suburbs.
Just a quick background on where Ughur cuisine originates from.
The Xinjiang province borders Mongolia, Russia, India and all the Stans. As a result, Uyghur cuisine meets somewhere in the middle between central Asian and Turkic tradition.
The Uyghur ethnic minority is predominately Muslim and so its cuisine is Halal, with lamb as the base of many dishes. Hand-pulled noodles, steamed buns, dumplings, spiced skewers and homemade bread are all popular dishes.
LOCATION
Dolan Box Hill is located on Station Street, just near the corner of Whitehorse Road. It’s not a great location as it is very hard to find parking, especially on weekends. We were all 30 minutes late. I think its just Box Hill Central itself is way to congested with high population in the area.
SERVICE
It was very quiet for a lunch time on a Saturday. Service was quick and prompt and each table had a button to ring bell for service (if required).
MENU
We ordered the popular Urghur dishes (I know because I have been to Dolan City branch many times) hehe:
Lamb Skewers (5), $12,00
Yangyu Tohu Kormisi, $28.80
(stir fried spicy whole chicken pieces with potatoes and capsicums, handmade noodles and special homemade sauce)
Uyghur Pastry, $16.00
(lamb, onion with black peper in homemade Uyghur pastry)
We also ordered:
Bolak Manta, $11.80
(Steamed buns with lamb and Chinese cabbage)
Fried Lamb dumplings
PRICE
To make it more worthwhile and value for money definitely go in a group so you can share the food and the price works out to be very reasonable.
Overall the food is well priced and good sized portions.
VERDICT
Unfortunately I am quite disappointed with the food at Dolan Box Hill.
It wasnt up to scratch compared with Springvale and City Dolan.
The only tasty food was the Lamb Skewers which was packed with flavours. We could have easily order more of them.
The whole chicken with noodles dish, is very huge dish, with minimal hand-made noodles ( its all at the bottom so you have to move all the chicken to the side to get to it). The sauce didnt have enough flavour and the chicken hadnt been cooked long enough into the sauce to get the flavour through.
The Lamb Pastry (which I call a lamb pie) is one of my favourite dishes, but this one missed the mark because the pastry was way overcooked to the point that the ends were quite hard and difficult to bite into. The filling itself was good, thank goodness.
The steam lamb buns were not bad, but I have had better.
I won’t be going back to Dolan Box Hill.
Unassuming and authentic dining spot. Good place for dinner and uninterrupted conversation. Prompt service, generous portions, flavoursome food, especially the lamb skewers – love it.
If I had to be picky, the poshkal koy gosh kormisi’s pancakes were a bit too thin and broke apart the moment I started putting the fillings on.
Note: food isn’t as spicy as typical Uyghur cuisine, fair bit milder so this might not go down well with some diners.
Will definitely return.
We came because of it’s named Dolan…and because we tried the other Dolan in the city so we would like to see how this one goes. Skewers were good, the chicken was just fine (don’t even want to compare with the CBD one) … Waitress were friendly (well services were way better than the CBD ones)
So, 3 it is
