In a not so obvious location on Whitehorse Road in Box Hill is this bright, modern Chinese restaurant which is on level 1 at The Chen Hotel in Box Hill. There is a grand staircase leading up to the restaurant. There is a main dining room and a smaller room at the back which is perfect for private dining (not good if you are sat there for yum cha lunch where you will be missed by all the trolley ladies).
We ate at lunch, yum cha, most of the usual dim sum dishes are on offer.
My highlights are the siu mai (which was very generous in size and meaty, served in a basket trio), prawn har gao (served in a basket trio as well), chive dumpling and prawn cheung fan.
The dishes I wasnt as impressed with were the salted egg yolk steamed buns (the dough was undercooked, we let the manager know who took it off our bill), char siu pastry (it was filled with more gravy sauce vs ratio of meat) and the white turnip pan fried cake (which was very floury in taste and didnt have much Chinese sausage or other ingredients in the cake).
The prices were reasonable here, however, I probably wouldnt go back again as there are too many other places I would rather return to or try.
1 star for the food, 1 star for the one dim sum lady who did a good job in her duty recommending the dim sum of the day.
Located in a new apartment building, stylish decor and still new. This yum cha place is busy on Monday.
We were not greeted or recognized by any staff when we arrive at the entrance. A waiter then came to ask if we had a booking, yes we do. Then he show us to the table and left. While were about to get ready to sit, another staff looks like the manager ask the same question with his very stress out voice. They are so understaffed, where you do not expect any customer service.
Now the food, they taste authentic in general. BUT! We found a staple in the ox tendon!!! Told the first staff pass by us, she obviously had too little experience to handle such serious issue, then we had to wait for the next staff to come by for the matter . She apologized and brought us a new dim sum. We feel theres no point addressing to the manager as he seems not care about his job and unprofessional.
Their management need a serious review on its overall operation, staffing training and customer service. Very disappointed in them.
Price wise, we had 10 dim sums, $87 bill.
Nice setting and decorations, friendly staff with some specialty. Mango pancake and the purple rice wrap with prawn and veggies are a must. Please make sure to pre order if making any booking.
