Have been here once before and it was fine. The second time, the whole family got food poisoning the next morning. The food was good, cheap and authentic but maybe only recommended for those with strong stomachs.

Mmmm so good. I love their home-made bianf biang noodle dish and black fungus salad so much. I’m sure that other things are also good, but I am struggling to steer away from my current favourites. The twin dumplings were very oily though, and kind of bland tasting, so I don’t think I would order that again. The staff are quite sweet and friendly, and the restaurant food is good quality, clean, and inexpensive.

I stayed in China for few months. This restaurant resemblance of what I had in casual street food. Food was well prepared with quality ingredients. Clean interior & staff is friendly. Very Chinese style where you have to call to order anything. I can understand why not many locals happy however Chinese casual dinning is like this & taste very authentic. Many ppl there were mainland Chinese born ppl. I would happily rate this around 3.8-4 mark. We order oolong tea very nice with the other dishes. Try pork ear salad very nice!!!

I went here to compare the Biangbiang noodles to the other Shaanxi. I also ordered the garlic cucumbers. When I ordered the waitress asked if I minded spice and I said no. When the garlic cucumbers came out I was eating them using chopsticks with no problem. She came and asked me if I wanted a fork. I always get put off when I go to Asian restaurants and I get asked if I want a fork, if I wanted one I’d ask. I’m sure if the waitress was eating at an Italian restaurant and they asked her if she wanted chopsticks while she’s in the middle of eating she’d be offended. Anyway back to the food, I got the Biangbiang and it looked better then the one at the other place but it lacked the spice and sourness that the other Shaanxi place had. I wonder if they were holding back for me even though I said I didn’t mind spice.

Ok food, but not as good as others.
The service is friendly enough. It’s hard to say if they are shy about helping you assume you know the rules of how and what to order – either way you must ask to get help if you are unsure. Sitting there and waiting for help will get you nowhere.
But the food is also only Ok. I’ve had quite a lot of Shaaxi food and this is a little bland compared to others.
However, I would still recommend going there to try it. After all, it’s only a quick, cheap meal.

Shaanxi is now one of my favourite restaurants in Box Hill, with not so good service that is balanced out with tasty food.

Having been here a dew times now, I’ve only had 1 waitress serve me who could speak fluent English, the other waitresses would speak broken English. It’s not so fun to converse in broken English but the food is really good that I come back anyway. Serving a variety of different dishes, their dumplings are some of the best in the Eastern suburbs and are quite cheap too!

Do give this place a try and if you like spicy food, order the Belt Noodles 😉
