This place is ridiculous, 1 HR waiting, half full restaurant (all of whom were here before us) and no one is getting served. Tempted to walk. Really not impressed (and I can put up with poor service, but this is beyond a joke). They did offer free spring onion pancake, but if you can’t service that number of tables, don’t have them. Food was OK

This place is clean and quite.I ordered a Beef fire rice, the rice is good but the beef is really bad. If the price is below $9 is ok to meet quality, but it cost $11 is a bit too much. Cuz I compare to the Vietnamese Beef rice I had yesterday and the day before in mitcham and Box Hill, there price are $12-$13 but the taste of Beef are much better. Hope this restaurant can improve the Beef fire rice.

All the dumplings are really fresh and the soups are just perfect! I really like it. The crowd is not too packed. Also, its just next to tatsing asian supermarket. after you having meal, you can just do grocery shopping.

Best fried pork soup buns () ever! I’ve had these many times, great as dine in and takeaway. Reminds me so much of the ones I had in China! The environment is simple, but clean and spacious – a refreshing change from the hustle and bustle of the main Box Hill area 🙂

Thanks to Sarah Loves Food, I was prepared with ‘must haves’ when we visited for lunch. No frills this place, but the service is friendly enough, the young man in particular had a ready smile.

One menu between the five of us, and one person poised with pencil and order form at the ready. Some of the menu items didn’t stand exactly as written on the order form, which slowed us down a little. We steered clear of the main dishes as a few comments suggested the strength of this place is in the dumplings.
    Our list was:

    Steamed Xiao Long Bao
    Pan-Fried Pork Soup Buns
    Pan-Fried Chive Pancake
    Pan-Fried Dumplings
    Pan-Fried Chicken and Prawn Dumplings
    Wonton in Chilli Sauce
Cold (not really) Pork and Vegetable Dumplings
    Spring Rolls

Of that list, my favourite would have to be the Cold Pork and Vegetable Dumplings. They’re not served cold, but neither are they piping hot. There is a delightful peanut sauce with it, and I struggled to stop eating these.

The other temptation also had a sauce, the Wonton in Chilli Sauce. There was a modrate heat to this soy and chilli sauce, though otherwise the same dumpling as the cold version as far as I could tell. This sauce was so good, I refused to give up the ’empty’ bowl, as it was indeed only emptied of dumplings, I wanted to use the sauce to dip my other dumplings in!

My partner liked the Pan-Fried Chive Dumplings the most, which I found OK, but wasn’t overwhelmed by.

So much pork, and not a hint of boar-taint, luckily for me, or I would have struggled. Particularly the broth for the soup dumplings, it was delicious, and I would have both the XLB and the pan-fried versions again. Yes the pan-fried has a thicker dough, but I didn’t mind this. The scorching on the bottoms of the dumplings left me reminiscing about a flavour for my childhood that I haven’t yet pinpointed.

The chive pancake wasn’t a hit with me, but the kids seemed to like it. The spring rolls were wonderfully crisp, not at all oily and an unfamiliar flavour that wasn’t unpleasant, though there didn’t seem to be a lot of filling in them.

The tea served is also quite different to anything I have tasted before – the flavour grew on me.

    Well priced. Would return.

I passed this restaurant several times and finally gave it a try for lunch today, it was a very happy experience. I was born and bred in Shanghai, the menu was not very long but brought back all the memories of Shanghai food. Since there are quite a lot of bad comments for this one, I made a safety choice of 4 dishes that they most common food in Shanghai. The most important part for bun in Shanghai is having soup inside, when u have first bite, u can feel the soup comes out of the bun and dip with vinegar that make it tasted better. This is the way we eat in Shanghai. The steam bun and pan fried pork bun are both met this requirement, so I will give it 8 out of 10. For the sweat and sour soup, mixed with Chinese mushroom and toufu, the taste just as same as mum makes, I give it 10 out of 10. I have to say this is the soup I grew up with, not everybody will love it. The rice cake is a common dish we always have in winter or earlier spring time in Shanghai, a bit a vegetable with shredded pork mixed with rice cake, I still remember gramma used to make it for our breakfast or lunch. This time this restaurant made it almost as same as my gramma made, I almost want to cry, plus the chef add a little bit sugar inside, this is the key ingredient in Shanghai style cooking. This is the best rice cake I have ever harvested after I left Shanghai. It is not a very fancy and nice decorated restaurant, it’s more like a small family business with a old couple make some Shanghai home style food in the kitchen. If you are looking for the feeling of home, or some traditional Shanghai breakfast food or snacks, this is the best choice. I will definitely go back to try their main course.
