I loved my experience at The Moldy Fig and it brought back fond memories of my time in New Orleans earlier this year.
My friend and I opted for the Feeling Hungrier? banquet which consists of the following dishes:
*Homemade Cornbread (mixed flavours of original, garlic and chilli): these were served warm with butter and were simply delicious, my favourite was the chilli.
*Roasted Chicken Wingettes: juicy chicken and the marinate was nice. The blue cheese range dressing was really good (without being over powering like some blue cheese sauces Ive had in the past).
*Loaded Fries: I loved the roasted capsicum and onion on these – simple but so flavoursome.
*Chicken and Andouille Sausage Gumbo: wow, I loved this dish. Such a rich and hearty meal, so much flavour.
*Prawn and Chicken Jambalaya: another lovely dish. A tomato based sauce with generous amounts of chicken and prawn.
*Beef Grillades: another rich and hearty meal. The beef was cooked to perfection and easily came apart. The mushrooms and mash topped this off.
*Cajun Seasonal Vegetables: I liked the yellow beans in this dish, they were sweeter than the green beans. The sundried tomato and herb sauce was good.
I ended my dining experience with sticky date pudding (one of my favourite types of dessert) – this dish was so yummy and you could smell the banana before even cutting in it it.
My friend got the Fig and ricotta hot cakes, I sampled a small piece and thought they were nice too.
I loved the laidback vibe of the restaurant and the blurry painting of Bourbon Street on the wall is great.
Staff were very friendly and each course of food came out promptly. Great value for money.
I will definitely be returning to try other items on the menu and have a cocktail or two.
Came here because we had a deal which basically made the whole dinner half price.
Unfortunately even at that price I couldnt recommend it.
We had:
3 x cornbread (mixed flavours) – dry and flavourless, couldnt tell the difference between the three flavours. Easily the worst dish of the night. And At $8 for three small scones I was quite disappointed with both the quality/taste and portion size.
3 x oysters – as this was my first time having oyster and Im not a fan of seafood anyway Im not really qualified to comment much on it. I thought it was ok.
Fried chicken Po boy – decent flavours, chicken was tender and juicy. There wasnt much chicken however and it was a bit difficult to eat as it didnt fit well in the bread. I also put their home made chilli sauce on it which was pretty good. Not very spicy but had a nice flavour.
Chicken and sausage gumbo – was okay, fairly standard, again chicken was juicy and extremely tender. Again went well with the chilli sauce.
Cajun pork belly – tasted pretty good, had a decent browning and was pretty tender. A few pieces were a tad dry and chewy. I wouldve preferred a bit more salt and unfortunately there was none available on the table.
Overall the food is decent but nowhere near good enough or big enough to justify the price tag attached. My guess is that the price is high partially because of the live music that they have.
We went as a group of 8 and most if it was pretty good. I went back a second time and the amazing beef po boy wasnt as good as before, it was still nice just not as good as last time.
The favourites were
Blackened chicken
Corn cobs
Loaded fries
Seafood etoufee
Beef brisket po boy
