I’m in the minority with this review, but it was just really average. The place was at 100% capacity on a Saturday night. After one of our party significantly burnt himself on a searingly hot metal skewer, we looked forward to the rest of our meal and were left wanting. The vegie curry was pungent with raw garlic, and lots of it. The charcoal chicken was the chespest part of the chicken – 2 flabby wings and drumsticks. The rest of the dishes were underwhelming. An email to the establishment with the above feedback was ignored.

food and high levels arent nice! Guess we got more of an experience! The food was very tasty! We went on the Thali night, and we enjoyed the array of different curries!

Really cool fusion of Indian flavours. I recommend the chicken / prawn sticks and gun powder fries. The chat selections were interesting, I liked the crab chat dish the best .

Bhang Indian restaurant and cocktail bar is located just off Sydney road in Brunswick tucked away in an old warehouse next to a lane. The building doesn’t look like much but the true secrets are hidden within, as upon entering the large heavy doors customers and welcomed into a world of modernistic authentic Indian cuisine accompanied by a full cocktail bar. After hearing such great reviews from friends we ventured down to Bhang after making a booking but left earlier to take advantage of their 5-7pm happy hour. We where greeted by friendly staff and we snagged a spot downstairs right in front of the bar on a high-rise bar table to enjoy some cheap pre dinner drinks.
Taking full advantage of the cheap drinks we order numerous round of Aperol Spritz as well as the nightly cocktail special being the Mambo in Mumbai. The Aperol Spritz packed a punch and quenched our thirst on a brutally hot 34 degree Melbourne evening. The Mambo in Mumbai was a spicy number consisting of garam masala infused Bombaby gin, Aperol, cumin syrup and citrus leaving a tingly aromatic texture on the tongue.

Happy hour slowly came to an end 🙁 and we moved upstairs to be seated. The upstairs area is home to the kitchen and another drinks station. The high-rise ceiling can mean the restaurant can get pretty loud but nothing is more pleasing then seeing others feast and enjoy tasty flavoursome food with loved ones. We were presented with the impressive menu that accommodates for all dietary requirements including a whole section of vegan dishes. After much discussion we couldnt wait to order choosing a large assortment of dishes to share. We went for serves of garlic naan, Kandahari Murg Tikka, Plantain avocado shrimp chat, Sabzi Jaiuri, Panchemal Dhal, vegan and non vegan Mast Biryan and a classic Kori Gassi. The tables around us were filling up fast and dishes ran off the pass looking sensational. The smell of the tandoor oven filled the restaurant and our tummies where rumbling. Appetisers arrived first looking delicate and sophisticated. The Plantain avocado shrimp chat being two fried plantain cups with spiced avocado and shrimp was a strange yet tasty dish. The chewy plantain base held the well cooked shrimp well and the avocado provided a lovely creamy texture. The Kandahari Murg Tikka consisting of spicy pomegranate basted chicken tikka certainly packed a spicy kick leaving us guzzling water but was certainly worth the assault on the taste buds. The chicken was moist sliding of the skewers easily, seasoned with a vibrant red spice mix. Our mains arrived shortly after and before we knew it our table was littered with food :).

The garlic naan was lovely and fluffy perfect to dip in to curries and wrap around handfuls of rice. Both Mast Biryanis where stand out dishes composing of Dum biryani, chickpeas, sweet potato, tomatoes and paneer, with the vegan dish missing the paneer and pastry on top. The basmati rice was light and fluffy littered with aromatic spices. The potatoes where cooked well and the chickpeas were delicious and when combining the biryani with other curries on the table our palates where sining with joy. The Sabzi Jaiuri was probably a little too hot for our weak spice tolerance but nonetheless we solider on and still enjoyed each bite of the Rajasthani spiced mixed vegetables folded through with creamy cashews. The favourite dish would have to be the beautiful Panchemal Dhal of slowed cooked 5 lentil dhal with cardamom, cumin, ginger and tumeric. The soup style dish was thick and creamy ideal to absorb the Dum biryani offering a slightly sweet tasting note. The lentils remained their texture and where not overcooked taking on the full flavour of the heavenly spice blend. The final curry on the table was the Kori Gassi, a classic Mangalorean spicy chicken curry with coconut and tamarind. The chicken was soft and tender and the curry based sauce was tart and nutty.

We sweated our way through, eating until we simply could not fit in another bite. Kingfisher beers where ordered in an attempt to cool our bodies down and although quenching our thirst a burning sensation still lingered on the palate. We left with full bellies and extremely impressed by Bhangs amazing and accommodating floor staff who go well and beyond to ensure customers are well attended to. Bhang delivers true authentic Indian dishes littered with flavour. If spicy is your thing well you will be in your element as most meals certainly ramp up your body temperature after a few bites. The environment and atmosphere is perfect for pre-dinner drinks at the bar but the real magic is experienced upstairs watching the kitchen come to life whipping out gorgeous dishes with ease.
