The staff here are an eclectic mix but they work together like a dream and the service is great!
The coffee is a thing of beauty – delicious! The earl grey tea was perfect and the spiced chai was like Christmas in a cup
The food was spectacular!!!!!!!
We will definitely be back! Thanks for an amazing breakfast on a lazy Saturday morning.
Lizzies first impression: just like the surburb itself – project 281 has come up with some quirky menu items and they were absolutely delicious. Inspired by Japanese cuisine, these brunch meals leave you feeling content but not too stuffed.
Lizzie enjoyed: the Japanese pancakes were the winners of this place – it tasted delicious especially with the soft shell crabs on top. The scrambled eggs were also cooked really well and had a lot of flavour in it. I quite enjoyed the taro latte – a good pop of colour to the feast and also tasted really smooth.
Lizzie did not enjoy: the fish taiyakis were a let
down unfortunately despite the impeccable presentation – I didnt enjoy the berry and coconut flavours and the batter itself was a little too soft for my liking. The mushrooms in the scrambled eggs dish could have also been more tasty.
Lizzie rates overall: I loved the ambience of this place as it feels industrial yet has all the elements of nature at the same time.
My partner told me about this cafe minutes from our bouldering gym which serves Japanese inspired food and we ought to try.
I was skeptical at first as any fusion style food tends to set off alarm bells in my head. Still I went ahead and order the Octopus Hash from the menu as it looked interesting.
It came out very well presented with the colours and texture. There was a piece of Octopus tail wrapped beside a hash brown, pickles and eggs. It had a spicy sauce accompanying this dish and I had to enquire with the waiter to see if this dish would consider brunch and if it is popular. Apparently it is!
I took a bite and it was delicious!!!! Who would have thought of such a mix like this. The spicy sauce had a good kick and the chewy Octopus went really well with the hot flaky hash brown and the runny eggs. I was in heaven!
Even my 5 year old loved the Octopus and the spicy sauce which surprised me. But he did down it with glasses of water afterwards!
My coffee was great as expected. Did I mention about the amazing plates and cutlery presented too coz we want to know where they got them from!
And what about the space! The interior is well designed letting lots of light in and is fairly airy with huge concrete blocks and plants growing out of it. We like the high warehouse ceiling as it cuts the noise of the surrounding diners out a bit.
Well done on such a great cafe with such an interesting menu. We look forward to coming back and trying something new!
Very warehouse vibes, with fantastic food and engaging service from the waitstaff.
Ordered:
Soft Shell Crab Okonomiyaki: poached eggs, japanese savoury pancake, tonkatsu sauce, vegan mayo, slaw, pickled ginger, bonito flakes ($24.00)
Korokke Hollandaise: poached eggs, japanese potato croquette, smokey beef, charred pepper, pickles, feta, cauliflower hollandaise ($21.00)
Tropical mango smoothie: mango, passionfruit, & coconut milk ($11.00)

Open, beautiful modern interior with sunlight flooding the upper area.
The food was decent – a menu inspired and infused with Japanese flavours with its very own western twists. It was a great opportunity to try some ‘Japanese fusion’ without going to a high-end restaurant, and although there’s plenty of vegan options on the menu, fusion food isn’t something I’m personally able to appreciate (yet).
For the drink – really thick and full of mango flavour, it’s a delicious treat to either kick start or meal or a thicc way to finish. Wouldn’t drink it during because it messes with the flavours of brunch, and there are some casual mango whiskers in there too.
Would recommend, unless you plan on going to boost – which is cheaper LOL
The interior of this place is amazing. We loved every bit of it. Coffee was perfect especially when they serve it in those awesome cups. The food was good but there are better places for food in Brunswick.
Plenty of gluten free vegan options in a nice big modern industrial space. The food took a while to arrive but it was delicious. I had the kawaii smoothie, vegan burger, waffle fries & greens.
I love Japan and I love BrunchProject 281 was off to a great start even before I walked in! After seeing the space and trying the food though – it went above and beyond!. WOW. A converted warehouse with SO much natural light that makes you forget where you are. They even take it one step further by creating an outdoor space that seamlessly links with the indoor space. I couldve hung out here for hours and just take it in. Luckily I visited Project 281 with 3 friends because the menu was just as impressive and hard to pick from with so many fusion options to decide from.
