Firstly we went to Mary Miller and the owner said that the cafe was closed due to changing their business hours and recommend we try out her partners restaurant Project 281 Cafe. Never heard of it so we decided to go out on a whim and give it a go.
The cafe is actually Korean and Japanese inspired. Lets start off with the interior, I was really feeling the greenery and the greys. I love how open the space was. Theres two levels and plenty of tables!
There was a great selection of food on the menu and it was sooo hard to pick. I really wanted to try to the beef Benedict but we ended up ordering the Octopus Hash, Crab Okonomiyaki, Taiyaki Waffles and the Japanese Fried Chicken.
First off we started with our drinks. We ordered the gangsta Hot Chocolate and Cold Brew Coffee and it came out in a DIY kinda way. I love the presentation! Its so cute and creative. I really enjoyed my hot chocolate it was not too sweet. The cold brew coffee was quite strange to me but Im not the biggest fan of coffee however my partner said it was really nice.
The Octopus Hash was quite nice. The octopus was cooked really well. It was so tender and soft and the hash brown went really well with it. The sauce really went well with the dish as well. All the flavours worked well together! My partner absolutely loved this dish!
Ive always wanted to try out Okonomiyaki! Ive seen it everywhere and heard its quite a popular Japanese dish. I really liked the soft shell crab and the slaw! The pancake was nice at first but started the get soggy and a bit sickening to eat. The poached egg could have been a bit better. It was runny however slightly over cooked in some bits. Overall, I enjoyed the soft shell crab! Its an interesting modern take of the Okonomiyaki.
The fried chicken was cooked beautifully. It was seasoning really well. It was tender and juicy and went really nicely with the ponzu, daikon and ginger.
Lastly, we had their famous Taiyaki Waffles. The plating was so cute with the fishes. Very Japanese inspired. The dish was a little heavy however I did enjoy the flavours. The waffle was quite doughy and I wasnt the hugest fan of the brandy coral.
Overall, good and quick customer service! I would defs come back to try some of their other dishes. Thank you Mary from Mary Miller for the recommendation.
Decided to check this place out for my Birthday.
I ordered their famous Octopus Hash and my partner got the Big Breakfast, Godzilla Size.
My meal was fantastic. The Octopus was cooked to perfection. There is chilli sauce, which gives it a great kick.
The Big Breakfast was nice. If theres one thing to note, that would be the hash – it was completely tasteless, especially compared to the hash I had on my plate. It didnt bring anything to the dish and it definitely needs improvement.
The coffee is fantastic. I dont know if what we had was roasted on-site, but I loved it.
The service is impeccable – all the staff had genuine smiles on their faces and were very friendly.
The interior is fantastic – loved the concrete as well as the open kitchen.
Overall, I absolutely loved Project 281 and I cant wait to get back to try something else.
I mean whats not good about this cafe seriously? The food, the atmosphere, the social consciousness, the staff. Theyre amazing. We had brunch here for a farewell of a friend and I had the Bulgogi burger. Honestly want to come back real soon to try their hemp latte.
