Very disappointing experience. Have been to the Spotted Mallard several times but tonights food was atrocious. Admittedly you don’t visit the Spotted Mallard for food alone as it’s a venue that hosts great bands and artists. We ordered a couple of dishes to snack on with a drink whilst we enjoyed Kylie Auldist but the food was that heavily salted it was inedible. Surely a service error but there was no apology provided or acknowledgement of the issue… just a comment that ‘oh, it’s not to your taste’. Anyway, it was good while it lasted but we won’t be eating here again. There are plenty of better options in Brunswick. Tip- eat before you come here.
Great venue for music and beer but the food was terrible. The beef burger tasteless, and fish tacos were dry and had no flavour either – really difficult to even though I was hungry. Such a shame because this place used to serve great food. Will still keep coming for the music but will eat elsewhere.
A lovely space, friendly staff & decent beer. Unfortunately my friends and I were served up incredibly under-cooked burgers. Really stomach-churningly under-cooked, in fact. All three of us couldn’t finish them, despite being very hungry.
Hopefully this was a once-off slip up tonight. Regardless, I won’t be ordering food there again for quite a while.
I had the wagyu burger with chips and salad for under $20. I had a big appetite that night and finished it all with no trouble. The burger was good and most noteworthy is the sweet bacon strips and thankfully the burger itself was not oily (something popular burger joints seem to frequently get wrong). Good quality meal with an appropriately portioned potato wedges on the side. The salad was only lightly seasoned with dressing which is fine.
Unfortunately, the band I was waiting for began 2 hours after the advertised time which was irritating. Good service from the Irish barman. The apple cider on tap was enjoyable and didn’t taste too strongly of alcohol.
Their live music can be a bit too intense at times, they hired a full on orchestra that drowned out the conversation and to be perfectly honest, each time I’ve been there the acts lacked talent. It appears as if it is stuck between being a wine bar that serves food, a resteraunt with light music and being a live music venue. Food I ordered was nice. Wide variety of alcohol.
Ventured here in the hopes of food, but being as the Street Party was on, had no luck at finding a table.
So we opted for drinks and a bit of a boogie with the band that was on.
The venue is huge, made up of mostly dining space and a tiny balcony area overlooking Sydney Road.
Will come back at a quieter time for the food.
Finally got a chance to hit this place up for a work bash, so happened to be a trivia night to boot. With quite a limited food menu, I had one purpose and one purpose only, the double burger! When this thing rocked up in front of me I felt like I had just picked a fight with the wrong person…gulp.
For its sheer size, it was so clean! Juices from the juicy patties didn’t run off and annihilate the buns. The parties were seasoned quite differently to most of the burgers places that have gone troppo over the past few years…but in a good way. I must add the the chunky hand cut chips they do here steals the show, everyone at our table wouldn’t shut up bout how good they were.
We came third in the trivia by the way!
