Nestled amongst the stunning architecture and hustle & bustle of Mailing Road sits a quaint and welcoming caf with a lot of heart. Walking into Chicken or the Egg, you can tell there is no pretention- from the delicious scents emanating from the kitchen to the welcoming smiles of the staff, we knew we were in for a wonderful experience.

It was an extremely cold and wintry morning in Melbourne which called for something hot and soothing- enter Mork and Prana *insert lovey dovey eyes here*. Our almond Prana chai latte and soy Mork 50% hot chocolate were both creamy, delicious and decadent enough to hit all the right spots and warm the soul.

Sometimes we go into cafes and the decision is easy and doesnt require much debate. In the case of Chicken or the Egg, however, we found ourselves struggling over of the menu, as it all looked and sounded soo good! Luckily, with the help of our host Steph, we were able to narrow it down!

-Torched poached eggs- poached eggs, zucchini ribbons, pesto, asiago, smoked eggplant smash and olive crumb on crunchy bread with a side of mushrooms
-Baked Spanish eggs- eggs baked in house-made chorizo capsicum tomato salsa, topped with melted manchego and served with herbed toast

Being lovers of all Mediterranean- style food, the torched poached eggs were a no-brainer! When the dish first arrived at the table, the photographing process was delayed due to the heavenly scent wafting off the plate. Recollecting ourselves, we took photos as quick as humanly possible to avoid any further delays in devouring our food.
The dish was absolutely beautiful. The combination of the pesto and zucchini with the eggplant smash and crunchy bread made it a lovely, warming meal. The cheese was also a very welcome addition. We couldve used a bit more pesto and olive crumb on the plate, but overall, we really enjoyed it.

Now, weve tried a few baked egg dishes in our lifetime and we are by no means connoisseurs, but we CAN tell you that this was possibly the best take on baked eggs weve tried to date. Where most contain some kind of feta or goats cheese, Chicken or the Egg opted to instead melt manchego cheese on top of the creamy, tomatoey eggs. Did it work? Oh hell yessssss! It was sensational! Every element of the dish was flawless! The generous serving of chorizo was flavoursome and not too spicy and the tomato salsa had a slight sweetness to it. A special mention also needs to go out to the herbed bread. When dipped into what we are now going to call the little pot of heaven, each mouthful became a delightfully crunchy and mouth-watering experience. This was the definition of soul-food.

A big thankyou to the team at Chicken or the Egg for a wonderful experience- from the delicious soul-warming food to the top-notch friendly service, it was an absolute pleasure. Thanks to Steph for being a wonderful host and to Paul and Nicole for providing us with the opportunity to visit- we cant wait to come back!

Very nice local cafe! Good coffee, good food, and good service. Cannot pick on anything. Tried the Pumpkin smash and Blue crab omelette, and both dishes are well presented, with very balanced flavor. Will definitely come back.
