When we used to live in Carlton, Bangkok Rain was a regular stop for us. We were recently back in the City and revisited.
While the menu has changed somewhat in 3 years (to be expected), the taste & quality has not. Cooked fresh to order with heaps of veges.
We had the satay chicken stir fry, basil chilli beef stir fry, rice and roti to takeaway. No complaints at all with the food. Only downside that prevented a 4.5 or even a 5 was the interior is pretty dated and the owners using some of the tables as a home office, which takes away from the restaurant feel. But as we had takeaway was not an issue for us.
If this restaurant was in nearby Brunswick / Smith Streets there would be a queue out the door every night.
This place is great if you have anyone with dietary requirements including vegan. All the curry pastes and sauces are homemade which means they are absolutely to die for. Portion sizes are good value for money. We got two serves of roti with peanut sauce, coconut rice and two curries which came to just under $40. Beautiful place if you’re not in a hurry – if you’re seeking fast paced Asian go elsewhere. Chill vibes only.

Best Thai food I’ve ever had, all ingredients are fresh and crunchy. The restaurant is lovely and has a really nice atmosphere. I have both eaten in and taken away. I highly recommend Bangkok Rain. My go to meal is always the stir fry satay. It’s to die for.
I never actually liked Thai food until I came here. The owners are lovely and the food is just stunning. Flavoursome, spicy, just mouthwatering. Great prices.
**6 months later – honestly if these guys didn’t exist I would starve to death. Every single – EVERY SINGLE dish has been thoughtfully prepared and trumps every other Thai restaurant I’ve ever been to – I go to Thailand and I wish I was back home at my local. Love these guys.
I take all my vegan and carnivorous friends here, and we all agree that it’s the best Thai we’ve had, (and we’ve been to Thailand) This place has a real warmth, largely due to Golf and Anthony, the legendary owners.
Bangkok Rain is a great little Vegan Thai restaurant, the best Ive been to and
if you’re looking for a great atmosphere and delicious Vegan Thai food then this is the place for you ! They cater for meat eaters as well so you can take your non-Vegan friends along as well, very handy.
Every dish is fresh and generous and I’ve spoken to the owners of this restaurant. They are probably one of the nicest restaurant owners that is truly caring and have passion in what they do.
