This place isn’t terrible, but definitely wasn’t as amazing as I was expecting. My friend and I needed to wait five minutes in the infamous queue, which was bizarre as the entire communal table plus two smaller ones were free inside. No matter, we dutifully waited (at least there was shade in the 35 degree heat) our turn. The decor is super cute. Very kawaii, very pastel. We were asked what we wanted to order within a minute (no exaggeration) of sitting down. We politely requested more time. My friend opted for the pumpkin dish and after much deliberation, I opted for the fried egg white dish. It sounded like there was a lot going on, but I was up to the challenge.
The dishes arrived pretty quickly after ordering, and they weren’t bad. My egg white fiesta was comprised of edamame, quinoa and multigrain rice with chilli, tomato, coriander, spring onion and a truck tonne of bacon. It was pretty tasty, and hard to finish. My friend was less enthusiastic about her pumpkin dish. She said the pesto drowned the entire meal, and she couldn’t finish it either (albeit for sadder reasons).
It’s not a bad place, but the hype surround Humble Rays is an utter mystery to me. I wouldn’t bother going back, even for the house-sized desserts. Best leave it to the people who have all of the free time to queue.
Weirdly enough I love dining alone. Asking for a table for one tells you a lot about a restaurants level of service and general philosophy. Ive heard lots of stories about long, boring queues at Humble Rays, yet I was warmly welcomed and seated almost immediately at a large communal table near the window. I felt very well looked after and ended up chatting to a mum and young toddler sitting next to me, taking note of what they were eating and saying was very yum. I followed suit and chose the crab scramble with a croissant and it was indeed yum. Thanks for a great start to a day in Melbs guys, would return and recommend to all!
