Impressed by the considerable selection of vegetable offerings here, Ma Xiao Er is quite popular amongst the staff and students at the university.
Minimum weight is 400g which equates to 10 dollars (the weight is typical of hot pot restaurants but slightly better value). The wait time is around 15 minutes and patrons go up the counter to retrieve their bowl once it is ready.
A bustling little place, with staff constantly calling out order numbers as they become ready.
Another pick your own food and make your own Sichuan noodle soup place. This is a good one. Its in Carlton so you could get a park. They had a good range of food choices available, including various vegetarian, meat and carbohydrate options. Even the service was good, they were pleasant as its our first time there.
The price is also very reasonable, you can go weight it repeatedly (they charge by weight) until youve got the right amount you want. In the picture, both those cost about $10 bucks and weighted just over 400g. Its a moderate sized serving you could certainly go more. Once youve made your choice you hand them your choice and they cook it in a bone broth. Then they call your number (in mandarin! But they figured that was no good for me so I had a special announcement in English) to collect your soup then they flavour it (degree of hotness up to you). Apart from Sichuan chilli you could have sesame, garlic, and a few others. I asked for extra hot… it certainly was!! However I thought there was not quite enough ma ie numb aka Sichuan peppercorns and rather a lot of la aka hot. We sat next to the water jug (which you help yourself to. Very handy.)
Overall a fine place for the make your own Sichuan noodle soup. Definitely up for repeat visits, even if you cant speak mandarin.
Spicy hot pot place are popping up everywhere but i still come here alot, not just because the food taste so great already and the fact the staff and place feel so great. Highly recommended
I love this place, much cheaper than the ones in the city (in terms of price per 500g). I always order a big bowl and share it with one other person because honestly, sometimes it can be quite easy to get carried away when selecting the ingredients.
After the items are weighed and paid for, they give you a number which gets called out.
Chilli is quite spicy, so ask for less when they ask you what sauces you want to go into your final product! The waitress has multiple bowls with different sauces in them, so make sure you ask because I think as a standard they put everything in!

Trending Asian style of eating! Just gotta love the pick ur own ingredients style. Better then and kind of fast food! Not to mention their broth are fantastic! You can even pick your own spiceness. G to the G. I am sure I will be back nezt time with more friends! This place always pack! Thanks for having us in your store.
Tasty Sichuan spicy noodle soup in this place! I was pleasantly surprised by the plethora of choices with lots of fresh vegetables and food items you could place into a bowl of soup. After they have cooked your selection, there are further sauces ( peanut, sesame, soy etc) that they add to the soup. A loud announcement is made in Chinese when your soup noodle is ready but you are given a number which pops up on a screen. The price is very reasonable, thus attracting a lot of asian students during lunchtime! They also have an unusual coconut milk drink available in the fridge near the cashier which is perfect match for the spicy soup.
