Oko Oko is conveniently located near Melbourne Uni, so its quite popular amongst students for a satisfying and affordable meal. I had the spicy tori okonomiyaki which was delightful. Of course, it cant compare to the real thing in Japan, but its quite decent for the price youre paying. Overall, a nice place to go if youre on a budget.
Ordered the pork gyoza, unagi Don, sake Don, chicken katsu and ebi tempura service was super friendly which made it better, the food was delicious and quick to serve too
Will come back for:
+ Butabara
+ Takoyaki
+ Unagi Okonomiyaki
If you are after some Japanese Street food in the form of Okonomiyaki (Japanese pancake), Oko Oko offers a decent variety to sate that appetite. They also serve a whole variety of other accompaniments that completes the experience. We tried the butabara (grilled belly pork on a stick) which was delicious (although fatty), the takoyaki (squid balls) were piping hot, textural and tasty, and the unagi okonomiyaki (eel Oko) was sticky, sweet and satisfying. The wagyu don was ok, but I rather pay a little more to get something special (as expected when you order a wagyu cut of beef). We also ordered the regular set which gave us a miso soup, salad and kimchi to round out the meal. Service was fine, but prices are on the upper range of the casual price range. All in all, a good little cafe for your fix of Japanese street food fare.
Been here a couple of times. The food is good and filling. There are lots of food to choose from the menu. However, I am abit disappointed with the Unagi fried rice because I dont see much unagi in it. But the others were good with lots of ingredients in it.
Ordered via uber eats and food arrived still warm and crispy. I was a bit disappointed that there wasn’t much curry sauce and also no pickled ginger (I asked for extra, so perhaps they don’t add it at all?). Overall, a nice lunch and saved me the trip and queueing! $12.90 for the food + $5 delivery = $17.90.
If you are looking for that wild, hot sizzling street food experience I’d say OkoOko still has a long way to go. It’s like a polite, toned down version of the original – perhaps they are trying to cater to a wider audience. Not to mention the portion was actually quite small. The matcha soft serve was good though, sadly they took it out of the menu when I revisited later.
Also, I think they really need to work on the air pollution issue, you can smell the oil as you walk down the street, not great.
