This cafe is so cute and welcoming. The fit-out is thoughtful and includes an enormous take-one-leave-one library. Though it’s only staffed by one, the service is always excellent. The menu has grown to offer a few quality choices for lunch and the coffee remains perfect. Their hot chocolates are exceptional. Sometimes during a rush service can be slow, but this is to be expected when there’s only one employee. Lovely place to settle in with a book and a coffee.
Tasty tapas. My friend and I stumbled upon Front Bistro when wandering down Lygon Street recently and were more than pleasantly surprised. We tried quite a few of the tapas dishes but by far our favourite was the pork belly with ginger flower salad….really delicious. The monkfish croquettes and the spiced chicken are also really good. They have a small but carefully selected wine list focusing on local Victorian wines, and beer is 2Brothers. A good find for sure!
Absolutely Fabulous!. After a lot of searching for a venue for my Mum’s 60th that had a set menu, I came across Front Cooking School which I hadn’t heard of before so was a little unsure. After speaking to Prue and Elle from the restaurant about the option of celebrating there, I felt very comfortable that it would be a great experience. Both myself and all of the 20 guests were thrilled with the experience. The atmosphere was fantastic, the service brilliant and the food was amazing! I am so glad I took the chance and booked here and would very highly recommend it for any occasion!
Sensational Food & Wine. Found this great place after the Antiques Fair on Saturday night. What an unexpected surprise we enjoyed – sensational food with Victorian winelist. The chef Kin San (formerly Taxi) uses Japanese influence to create dishes such as divine mushroom soup; quail in master stock; roast pumpkin, leek and gorgonzola gyoza; miso marinated panfried king dory; the best twice cooked pork neck and belly you’ll ever taste; a wagyu beef stew that transcends all other stews; and a luscious bitter chocolate fondant and red berry salad to finish. Each dish was exquisitely presented with subtle yet mouthfilling flavourings. The value was extraordinary and there is cheap flat rate parking just a couple of doors down. Highly recommend this delightful place.
Unexpected delight. What an unexpected find in Lygon St. Don’t expect pasta and pizza here, expect amazing food such roast duck breast and mashed potato served with a red miso and blueberry sauce, or blue swimmer crab sushi roll wrapped in a soybean sheet with mirin and rice vinegar glaze. All brought to you by the ex head chef at Taxi and he is still cooking the same high calibre food you’d expect from such a venue, without having to head into the city.
Worth the trip to Lygon Street…. Recently I enjoyed a six course degustation dinner here and wasn’t sure what to expect what with the restaurant being on Lygon Street. But my guests and I were truly blown away by the meal. Everything is of the highest quality, really refined, beautiful presentation plus delicate and amazing flavours. There were some standouts for me – the soybean rolled soft shell crab sushi roll – in a word INCREDIBLE! And the handicraft required to make this zucchini wrapped scallop with lemongrass broth was just amazing. Definitely check it out – worth the visit to Lygon Street.
Excellent experience. I have been twice now and exceptional both times. Service, food, everything. Meals are bit more expensive than other places nearby but are three times better at least!
