An aesthetic Japanese eatery. (3.5 )

Ambience: The place is quite spacious, and surrounded by mostly floor to ceiling windows, it has really nice lighting at daytime, though can be bit annoying as well when it hits you (sitting beside the window). Nonetheless its very chill ambience and very minimalistic and clean. Where i sat which is the corner, i did feel that the song was tiny bit loud. I have to mention their bathroom though as it was super clean, and they provide everything from women’s emergency kits to handcreams. ()

Service: When i came in the staff was at the back of the kitchen, but came out after a minute or so and seats us. She was friendly and professional, explaining when we asked about the dishes. The food though took a while, despite there not being so crowded (about 15mins), but still reasonable. It’s a also a bit hard to call the staff up because she’s working alone and kept going back and forth between the kitchen and serving (I went to the counter to ask for things twice). Nonetheless, once our water jug was empty, we’re given a new one right away.

Food: I had their gyutan don which is the ox tounge rice. It was a really balanced dish. It was my first time having ox tounge and it was tender, with a bit of chewiness. It was a bit salty, but i feel wasnt enough to go with the rice which was perfectly cooked btw, and the sliced avo on the side, thus i asked for some teriyaki and soy sauce where i dipped the meat into. I love the pickled radish on top too, and asked for a bit more. Overall a nice hearty dish, it was supposed to be their small size but i think it was enough for a meal. Maybe a bit more meat would be good.

I tried my sister’s vegetarian ramen, it was surprisingly just okay. The noodle was almost soba like and was a bit starchy and bit tough, we weren’t a fan. The broth on its own was yuuuum but didn’t accommodate the noodle as it barely has any taste. The vegetable was fresh, love the asparagus and broccolini but again bland.

They had a special student lunch menu for $10 which was a vegetable curry rice and it looked pretty good, despite only trying the curry sauce which was definitely different than most japanese restaurants or packaged curry (it depends on your preference really as my friend prefer her usual curry). Nonetheless it came with some onion rings on top which was pretty good.

Overall though there is definitely a standard to the quality of the food.

Price: Decent prizes for the quality of the food.

YUM: ox tongue don (with a more flavorful sauce)
    NAH: none

photos: gyutan don (small size), vegetarian ramen, vegetable curry.

Venue lacks a bit of atmosphere however the staff were very friendly and the food was great. Between two we went for the grilled squid, the tuna tataki, the salmon sashimi, the gyoza and the lamb ribs. I loved the salmon sashimi and the squid in particular but found the lamb ribs a little too fatty.

A lovely contemporary restaurant serving Japanese cuisine that can be a little noisy if crowded. We began with the grilled squid, five skewers of yakitori before having the main pork belly slices which was the highlight of it all. Ending our meal with the homemade Yuzu tea was definitely a winner as it was delicious and warming at the same time.

My favourite ramen ever: the lemon lime yuzu ramen. The broth was so full of flavour: a chicken stock base, which you could tell was made there. The chicken was so succulent and kind of melted in your mouth. The other garnishes and toppings all worked so well together. It was so soothing and so uplifting. Seriously have dreams about this ramen.
We also tried the fried chicken which was perfect : not greasy at all and perfectly crispy.

The actual restaurant is so stylish, and has a Melbourne minimalist vibe. Staff were super friendly too. PLUS: the bathroom was lovely and had sanitary napkins!! Such a beautiful and thoughtful touch, which I think shows real care for the customer.
Seriously impressed with Torrisong and recommend it to all my friends, and to you too.

I actually thought this was primarily a yakitori bar before arriving which turned out more to be a modern Japanese izakaya. To my surprise also, it was pretty quiet for a Friday night with only a handful of patrons. Note that their menu is mainly ramen and don for lunch, during dinner however is their full izakaya selection.

They’ve got a variety of drinks and they’ve done a good job providing drink descriptions on the menu. My friends got their selective Japanese whiskey and I got some shochu mixed with soda water, refreshing. We later slid into their sake section.

They’ve got their omakase/feed me option which we contemplated on getting but we wanted free range on our selection (especially desserts). We started off with some fresh plump oysters with a ponzu dressing which paired well with the brininess. We also got some scallops which had a dollop of mentaiko mayo and seared. The scallops were naturally sweet and tender with an added richness and creaminess from the mayo.

Originally drawn to this restaurant for their yakitori we got a selection, unfortunately you can’t select which pieces you’d like as it is pre-selected by the chef. We really wanted some chicken skin! It’s hard to fault chicken on a stick especially when they use high quality chicken and simple seasoning (some with teriyaki). It was however awkward sharing it between three people.

The tuna tataki with avocado paired with ponzu and spring onions was light and refreshing, the tuna slightly seared then assembled. Deceptively simple yet tasty.

The twice-cooked miso pork belly was lovely but would have been extraordinary with more charring on the meat. The heftiness of the pork was offset with the salad which was a nice duo. We also got some prime beef short rib (bone out) which was tender and beefy, tare glaze packed a lot of flavour and was paired with a simple potato salad on the side.

What we really enjoyed was the ox tongue don, the egg was perfectly cooked and gave the dish some body and richness, the ox tongue whilst it had a chewy texture it just kept on releasing some great flavours into our mouths.

Dessert unfortunately did not fare as well. We ordered their house-made matcha ice cream which we were told had not yet set and hence was not served. We got their house-made lavender ice cream with honeycomb also which wasn’t bad, it was slightly icy and the lavender was subtle. We realised that the honeycomb was slightly burnt, not a total write-off and not sure if intended. Their earl grey tea panna cotta with honeycomb (same type from previous dessert) andpistachio meringue was lovely, nice tea flavour and was quite smooth. I would like to see a bigger portion even if at a higher price point. What I felt didn’t work was the sake-poached pear with Tate de Moine cheese. A bit of theatrics with the shaving of the cheese which was spiraled into a flower and eaten alongside with a cracker and pear. The cheese was strong and sharp and overshadowed the pear which wasn’t too particularly sweet. Mixed reactions all round.

We really enjoyed the ambiance and the friendly staff that were eager to help. A lot of great things came out of that kitchen but dessert let them down a bit. They are still relatively new and we had difficulty choosing our dishes, they all sounded really inviting.

An absolute hidden gem in a nondescript setting, this place has quickly leaped up to become one of my favourite Japanese restaurants in Melbourne. Don’t be deceived by the minimal deco and almost industrial layout, the food here was much fancier than I expected but also very reasonably priced, beautifully presented and of excellent quality. A heads up too for the friendly staff who patiently explained all the dishes and were very attentive throughout the evening. We ordered a range of dishes to share including:
    – the yakitori set (chicken was well grilled, marinaded and delicious)
    – grilled squid (so tender, possibly one of the best non-crumbed squid I have had)
    – grilled camembert roti (interesting, never had something like this before and still not sure what to make of it, but I think I like it!)
    – sashimi hokkaido scallop (pretty good, scallops were very fresh and salad was nice)
    – edamame (the shichimi really gave this a spicy kick!)
    – deep-fried cauliflower (omg this was so tasty with the sauce, never knew cauliflower could be this tasty; also very generous serving)
    – age-dashi tofu (lovely, the sauce poured over the top did make the tofu slightly less crunchy but it was still delicious)
    – gyoza (ok, nothing too special from a taste pov although it was very temperature hot which may have made it hard to appreciate the flavours, nice that it came with the soy and spicy sauce although the latter wasn’t very spicy imo)
    – karaage (this was delicious)
    – teriyaki lamb ribs (tender and excellent marinade, a very tasty dish)
    – twice-cooked miso pork belly (although I do eat a lot of pork belly, this one was simply divine, so tender, perfectly marinaded, I even ate all the fat on it which I don’t normally do….just delicious!)
    – strawberry granita (refreshing)
    – earl grey tea panna cotta (lovely)
    – nashi pear and tate de moine cheese (this polarised my friends, some liking it and others not; i personally loved the smell and taste of this Swiss cow cheese although the combination of nashi pear bread and cheese is still something my tastebuds are trying to work out)

It was an excellent dinner. The dishes came out quickly and we had a good selection of beer, sake and other beverages to choose from. Unfortunately, it seems like ramen is only available for lunch and I would be very keen to try theirs. Will definitely be back, highly recommended.

Lucky that we made reservation as it was a full house on Sat night. They serve yakitori and some jap dishes in mostly small portion. We had a light dinner with chicken katsu sando and the signature ox tongue don, I would rate the sando better than the don. The chicken katsu had a little bit of the savory soy sauce flavour and evenly coated in crispy breadcrumbs, the sandwich tasted good with the right amount of wasabi mayo. The don was fine, ox tongue were in thin slices. Although it came with a japanese poached egg, personally still think its quite dry without any sauce. Friendly staff nice service!
