Was excited for this place to open as there is not that many Japanese Tonkatsu places around.
However, the place is not authentic Japanese and unfortunately the flavours were not quite what I was looking for.
The ambience is cute and inviting. We got seated in the little booths on the side which were also quite cute.
Unfortunately, a young child may have been seating in my spot before me as there were crushed crumbs all over my end of the booth which despite giving it a wipe, i could still feel throughout the night. The floor beneath me had food everywhere and was slippery like sauce had been split. Sadly, the waitress who seated us was friendly but just watched me as I was cleaning my seat and did not offer me a tissue or anything as I had no choice but to wipe it down with my hand. We were not off to a good start…
I got the Pork Cutlet Katsu served don-style which came with an egg and miso soup and the Pork Cutlet set that comes with a side of rice, miso soup, side of pickled ginger and a small cabbage side.
Both comes with good quantities for the price.
I found that the don had too much fish flakes which was difficult to eat as it tended to fall out of the bowl and as it is a dry garnish, it made the dish even drier. The flavour of Katsu was pretty good. Good amount of Panko breadcrumbs and not toooo oily. But the Katsu was salty and plenty seasoned so I didnt feel the need to put on a lot of sauce. As I couldnt dip my Katsu in the Katsu sauce as that too was a little salty, I would though have liked a little more sauce put on the rice which then have given the dish more flavour.
Overall I though the food tasted average.
Not bad but nothing special. But you definitely leave stuffed after your meal. I do think it is a good place for locals who want to get something close to home to come and visit time to time.
Food has very crispy Katsu which is nice but it’s not an authentic Japanese restaurant. The staff are not Japanese and so this comes across in the way the foo is prepared and cooked and also the internal decor has gone for a more minimal vibe than what a Japanese restaurant would normally be like. I only mention this because the store is marketed as being Japanese both in the name and the food offerings so it was disappointing. The crumb of the Katsu comes off the pork whereas if it was well done it wouldn’t. Staff are friendly, although you do need to go up to the counter to order.
Most members of my family love katsu curry so when this place showed up as a new listing, we had to try it out.
We ordered pork and chicken katsu curry, edamame, lotus root chips and pork gyozas. We were given complimentary Japanese potato/egg salads while we waited for our food.
The panko crumbed pork tenderloin and chicken thigh were generous in thickness. A good amount of decent katsu curry. This place would be in my top 3 ‘best katsu curry’ category. The other entree dishes were also yummy. The green tea I ordered had actual green tea leaves. I’ll definitely be back.
Service was prompt for us but that’s probably due to us getting there right upon opening. By 12:30, they were packed and several tables were waiting a while for their orders. The place is spacious enough to cater for prams and is kid friendly.
Tips: cash only (possible EFTPOS facilities in future), self serve water and cutlery station, queue at till to order food.
Nice panko style katsu. However bit on the dry side. Overall good value for what it is, good portion size. For more foodie goodness follow my ig: emptystomach
I was so excited when Kyodai Katsu hit Carnegie and I was right to be. The katsu is so crispy and beautiful and it paired with a beautiful light curry. The highlight is definitely the Nutella dessert. A must order!
Modern looking Japanese eatery with a very specialized menu on panko fried chicken or pork cutlet on rice. We loved it! You can choose from just the don, or a bento or a curry version. Generous bonito flakes on top of onsen egg, simply delicious. We accidentally spilt our soup. They jump to our help immediately, cleaning up the mess we made & replacing a new bowl of soup. Now, this is great service!
A decent place for Japanese Katsu. Tried the Chicken Katsu Don ($13.9) and Panko Chicken Curry ($15.9). The panko-coating on the chicken was very crispy – however I found that the Don had a bit too much bonito flakes, it almost felt like half the dish! The curry was okay, but a little bit on the thin side, and couldve done with a larger portion of curry. They do give you free potato salad on the side though. However, the taiyaki was pretty nice – crispy, sweet and filled with warm Nutella. Its just a bit too small in size. Overall, it was a pretty average dining experience – nice to try, but probably not worth coming for again.
