4.5One of the things that I crave in winter is a big bowl of hearty and warming soup, and Korean food meets the brief perfectly. So when a friend suggested to meet here for dinner, I was brimming with excitement. On her recommendation, we ordered the spicy beef stew (I hope I have the name right as she did the ordering) and the fried chicken. We also opted for a topokki hot spot, which was similar to an army stew. The complimentary home made kimchi rounded up the meal, and this kimchi was quite the star with its bright and clean flavours. What a feast this was! The topokki hot pot came with a side of deep fried veggies – both excellent. The fried veggies were super crispy, with a batter that was lighter and more well-seasoned than a tempura batter. The hot pot could feed a village – rich, piquant broth and generous with the ingredients. The broth for the spicy beef stew was just as hearty, and the beef was cooked to the extent that it just fell of the bone.Their version of the Korean fried chicken was a bit different from the norm; the sauce was tangy and sweet, and topped with green and red chillies to give it a spicy kick. The crunchy and moist chicken pieces were piled on top of a bed of fresh lettuce, lending it another layer of crunch and lightness.I did find that all the dishes here leaned towards the sweeter side, much sweeter than those that I had in other Korean restaurants. It’s a matter of preference whether this floats your boat or not. With a button on each table to call for service, help is never far away and we encountered wonderful hospitality the whole night. A great meal with a copious of amount of drinking, taking advantage of the two beers and 1 shoju deal for $20.
