The staff at Slave 2 the Bean are lovely. Who cant resist coming in here with their cute cartoon coffee bean logo? The service is good and the cakes are great. Nice and cool in Summer and Warm in Winter. A cute little place to go.

I came here today with my family for breakfast. We made our own way to our table and after looking at the menu, we ordered a few jaffles, eggs, pie, and soup. I found the cheese and tomato jaffle to be okay but especially liked the cheese as it was stringy and the tomato was piping hot. The jaffle with the poached egg in it was overcooked and the egg was hardboiled – tasted OK still I guess. The salmon, cream cheese, onion and capers sandwich was as expected. You could choose between white and wholemeal bread. The white bread was too thick and there was just enough salmon to satisfy. No poached eggs available only scrambled and fried and the scrambled serving was pretty small. I would’ve preferredsourdough bread as an option. The pumpkin soup was tasty and hot and came with toast. The croissant was good as was the raisin toast.

The staff were not always available and their English wasn’t so great. The waitress tried to remember our order until I suggested she write it down. She came back with atiny piece of paper which she tried to write on in her hand! On the table, there were no condiments and we had to ask for salt and pepper. When the salt came – it was empty. The coffee, however, was really nice – I think they use a special type of coffee bean. Other people on the table, were satisfied with the food albeit not greatbut it wasnt to my taste.

Loved the ice long black here! I love light coffees and it was perfect for me. Will be back to try other things on the menu. The service was okay as well.

Visited the Slave 2 the Bean today for a quick, light lunch and chose the Beef & Mushroom Pie. I found it flavorsome and quite filling, only problem it was served warm to hot, not steaming hot (probably kept warm in a bain-marie). I found the young staff member friendly, polite & very helpful. The eatery’s background music was barely audible, ideal for chatting with a friend over a coffee or similar. The dcor was a mix of both modern & old style with rustic tables alongside modern chromed seats. It was fairly quiet being a Tuesday lunch, I assume it would be busier later in the week.

The Juror’s Verdict: Food 3/5, Service Provision 5/5, Will I return: Yes, overall, nothing spectacular however I will return in due course for a different menu selection.

Other people’s goods. Interesting comments from Elaine. In response:
    – They may use the best quality coffee beans but the coffee is still watered down in the larger than usual cups.
    – I acknowledge sandwishes and foccacias could have been made on site, but in this case why having them all plastic wrapped (on the day I visited, it was a Sunday)? Not the best for any bread product.
    – As I stated the pies and cakes are from somewhere else, and Elaine agrees. Quality is a point of opinion, this is why we have reviews. I said fair quality for reasonable prices.
    – Coles caf: see the Southland Coles store, they had a Coles caf concept for over 12 years. Which is not that bad by the way.
    – My negativity as of 24 July: 247 likes, 42 dislikes (15%). And I did not dislike this store, I actually thought fair not to rate it at all. It is still Elaines 1 vote 100% like it today.
Anyway, I usualy come back to see if restaurants act on critical reviews, and amend or delete my comments if they are not relevant anymore. Thats the point of the whole exercise

Other peoples goods. What can be said about a place which only sells other peoples goods? Nothing, absolutely nothing is done on the premises. All pies are Bocastle brand, which is fine if I am at the deli. All cakes are made by a local bakery (I was told). All was fair quality for reasonable caf prices.
Obviously the coffee was done on site, and I was not impressed by the large cups resulting in watered down products; the mugs are even bigger.
It was like going to a Coles caf, except that at least there they make their own sandwiches.
The venue is OK and the service was nice. All in all, not bad, not good, just plain forgettable.
