We tried 196c below at the Food Truck Park Festival, the ice cream it was so popular that they were sold out in a few flavours on the first day . Our first choice was to buy the food truck special which was the Totoro which was shaped as a rabbit, as it sold out we got the gaytime ice cream which was the next best choice. The ice cream was made quick, tasted sweet, and had chocolate bits through out.
I tried the limited edition white chocolate totoro with fairy floss, meringue shards with peach nitrogen gelato. Taking away all the gimmicks, it was very good peach gelato. Not too sweet, smooth texture and tasted like peach. I bought it for its good looks but it had substance.
The wankiest version of ice-cream I’ve ever had. This is ice-cream so over cooked it’s just nothing short of an excuse to clean out your wallet. So we’re at the Yak’s Ale BBQ fest at the showgrounds. Kids want ice-cream and as far as we could see this is the only ice cream stall on a hot summers day. It looks like a long lineup only to discover people are just waiting for their orders to be fulfilled, so there’s no sense of order to ordering. Despite the logo of ice cream in a cone on their van they only serve it in cups and its all adult offerings. But we persist and order two cups at an eye gouging $8.50 each. We then wait 10-15 minutes for ice-cream… for ice-cream! Not for a burger or fries… but ice-cream. Something that should be scooped up within seconds and put in a cup or cone. Now I had no idea that this company make ice-cream to order, and for the life of me I can’t understand why you would. Ice cream doesnt need to be made to order. You could have served so many more people and sold so much more if it was just regular fricken ice-cream. After the long wait, the 196 below ice-cream, which still melted in the sun pretty quickly, didn’t taste any different from regular ice-cream. There was nothing special about it. So why the long wait and why the over pricing? This is hipsterville gone mad.
I tried their glow in the dark ice-cream for White Night. I was very impressed! It looked so pretty. I hope they come up with more interesting ideas like this one.
I was first introduced to 196 two years ago during an international food festival at Melbourne Showgrounds. I was helping my friend out at his stall and 196 was one of our neighbours, and I was impressed by their affability and jovial personalities. The owner has knack of employing hardworking, approachable yet kindly employees and this shows in the subsequent times I have dealt with them as a paying customer. This makes it hard to write this review as while I’m a fan of their work ethics, I’m not terribly impressed by their gelato. The nitrogen gelato is admittedly smooth and creamy in texture, but flavour-wise, nothing to blow my socks off. The soft serve sorbet is indeed a pretty sight (see their glow in the dark soft serve for White Night) but it was too sweet and tasted too syrupy. The redeeming quality is the black waffle cone. It had a nice charcoal taste to it, and helped balance out any overpowering sweetness. After all is said and done, I’m not opposed to the idea of returning – at least I’m guaranteed friendly service and decent gelato.
Very modern sciencely type of atmosphere, friendly staff and nice icecream with the nitrogen infused. I had a golden gay time and im loving it.
A nice and modern new pop up store that makes ice cream out of nitrogen. The decor was nice and the staff were very friendly and approachable. I tried the golden gay time ice cream which was sweet yet salty.
