I love a free meal, even better when the folks order because it’s like an omakase but you are placing yourself in their hands haha! I for one cannot read all the Chinese specials they have plastered on the walls so it’s always an advantage to bring someone who can.
As always complimentary soup is given, basic beef broth to ease you into the feast. We got baby abalone two ways, one with dried shrimp and the other with black bean. The sauces that came with it were super tasty however the flesh of the abalone was a little overdone and as a result a bit rubbery.
The XO pipis however came in a thick spicy sauce, using the shell to scoop up as much of that sauce and into your mouth was the way to do it. Chinese donuts, why didn’t we get them? I have no idea, but if you do ask for it on the side to mop up the rest of that sauce.
Next was a large array of mains to share family style. First dish was pork spare ribs with a sweet and sour sauce, almost always get a variation of this and the picky kids at the table always demolish this. What wow’ed us was the pepper beef served up with dragonfruit and surprisingly was nearly everyone’s favourite of the night. Tender peppery slithers of beef combined with some sweet dragonfruit covered in the same sauce was divine.
A dish full of fish ball/scallop and an array of broccoli was typical of Cantonese cuisine, simple preparation and mild seasoning. This was also true to the 2 for 1 dish that we got with trout, the first being trout fillets stir fried with vegetables which was fantastic as you could taste the freshness of that fish without it being masked with heavy sauces. The other portion was in a claypot with the rest of the trout (boney parts), tofu, char siu and some more vegetables. Saucey, garlicky and if you’re like me you’d work your way around those fish bones!
Kids at the table were still hungry and they do love a bit of kung pow chicken. Unfortunately it fell flat and was bland, they had omitted some key ingredients, Sichuan peppercorns for one.
Finished off with some complimentary fruit. Another thing they do here is roast meats which directly competes with a couple of their neighbours. I’ve had their roast duck takeaway before and found it good, great fat to meat ratio and was nice and juicy. We found it awkward ordering individual bowls of rice as usually they provide a bucket of rice for you to share with the rest of the table. I didn’t pay but according to the folks it’s one of the most bang for buck Chinese eateries in Melbourne.
Rude waiter/ waitress. Portion is big but food don’t taste good. Won’t be coming back at here. Highly don’t recommend this place. So many other nicer choices in Clayton.
