Lovely family business, excellent sweets. I love bringing my girls in here to buy sweets, we each have our favourites. Usually the same lovely woman serves us. I asked where she was tonight – out the back being treated by her 5 daughters and 1 son and grandchildren for mothers day. You can’t beat that. Always great service, great food, great prices.

Amazing!. Love love love. As a vegan it’s quite difficult to find delicious sweets that are not only delicious but reasonably priced. The fact that Al Nadas wholeheartedly embrace the compassionate approach to baking is just a plus!
These sweets are amazing, taste just like I remember the non-vegan versions tasting. Delicious.
So happy to have found this place!

You’d hardly know it’s vegan. I had some spare time on my hands before an afternoon shift on the psych ward on Australia Day (public holiday wages, woo-hoo!) so I dashed up to Coburg on the 19 tram to get some Lebanese pizza. Where I hopped off was close to Al Nada. I had read on a veggo blog how the young woman who runs this place decided to specialise in vegan Middle Eastern sweets. I’m not veg myself (and I feel guilty about my meat-is-murderous ways) but I like to toss some trade to virtuous businesses. So I popped in for a few sweets to go with my pizza.

Al Nada is not Balha’s. But then again, nothing else that I’ve seen in the world equals that joint. The selection here is limited compared to its competition down the road, but everything I bought at Al Nada was fresh. Their baklava and other pastries are drier than Balha’s, which is not bad, because many Middle Eastern pastries get macerated from sitting in syrup too long. I could taste a little difference in the flavour of the baklava that came from being made with vegetable shortening instead of butter. It’s hard to describe — like the taste of grain and oil instead of grease and butter. If I hadn’t been consciously trying to sense it, I probably wouldn’t have noticed.

One other thing I noticed was the subtle bit of shredded coconut in the ladyfinger baklava rolls, along with the usual walnuts. Nice flavour touch! Not many places do that. The round pastry with walnuts in the centre was no different to a non-vegan brand. If anything, Al Nada’s sweets are less greasy than butter varieties. The prices are OK — it cost me $4.50 for three pieces of average size. Al Nada is a supporter of left-wing progressive politics, as you might expect from a vegan joint next to a radical arts shop. So go there if you’re not a politically regressive troll, eh? Lefties are sweeter than reich-wingers any day.
