We booked this experimental Degustation for $25 each. It was advertised as having 5 courses, but only consisted of three. The excuse was that they counted every bowl as one course. This was truly misleading. You can’t say noodles with satay sauce are two courses because the tofu and sauce come in a different bowl to the noodles! I didn’t like it that I had to use the same bowl for all three meals as it was getting dirty from the last ones and the flavors were mixing.

The food itself was ok but simply not enough.
You’d think that for $25 your hunger should be satisfied. Very disappointing indeed.

Most wines only come in bottles, you can’t order a glass. We wanted to have the pineapple cider from the menu, but it was not available. The wine we ordered gave my partner an aching jaw, sign of bad wine.

The decor and music of this place is simply awful. The overall experience was very disappointing. I urge everyone to avoid Shu Restaurant. Definitely not worth a visit.

What an incredible dining experience at Shu. This place delivers, from the very on-trend decor to the service to the incredible presented, innovate dishes. The new vegan degustation menu is awe-inspiring. Everything is beautifully presented and thoughtfully developed, using premium ingredients and inspired by the owner’s Sichuan background. While everything was delicious and gorgeous, the tempeh cracker with vegan feta and tomatoes and seaweed caviar really stood out, as did the eggplant with burnt chilli. Shu is definitely rated as a vegan fine dining option in Melbourne – It deserves all the acclaim.

Vegan degustation started out strong but the dishes quickly became uninspired and all had the same flavour. The first few dishes were beautifully presented, then we ended up with brown noodles in a small bowl with not even a garnish… very strange. The final dish, an avocado cheesecake with mango szechuan coulis was terrible, maybe they forgot to take it out of the freezer in time but it was rock hard, also barely a hint of sweetness. Not great to end the night on a poorly executed dish. Can’t complain too much as it was 10 courses for $55 and we left feeling full.

Service was good, but the kitchen was definitely overwhelmed with the small amount of people seated and we were waiting 25 minutes in between courses.

Overall glad we went and experienced it, but wouldn’t go back for the degustation. Maybe try the a la carte menu next time if we’re in the area but we wouldn’t drive across town again for it.

The decor is absolutely mad – super eclectic and super cool. Our waitress was also stellar. Unfortunately, despite an early booking where there were only 4 other patrons dining the degustation still took over 3 hours which was too long for me personally. The food was lovely but I think Szechuan cuisine isnt for me as Im not a big fan of every dish being super spicy. the best dish was the mushroom wrap which I didnt photograph.

What a great vegan experience! All the dishes were so colourful and beautiful. Everything tasted very fresh and delicious. Will be back soon for the heirloom tomatoes!

Walking into Shu, we immediately noticed the quirky/funky decoration of the place. We really like the modern and fun vibe the place has.

We were lucky enough to be invited to try their 10 courses degustation. We have never really had Chinese vegan food before and were surprised how good it was. There are four sub-courses in the degustation, including Raw, Picnic, Childhood Memories and Sweet. The first three sub-courses has three small savoury dishes. Out favourite sub-course would be the Raw, it was refreshing. All the dishes were creative and beautiful. We ended our meal with the avocado cheesecake. It is an interesting take on cheesecake, wasn’t too sweet, so that’s a plus.
