First of all, I was very impressed by the service here. It was attentive, helpful and efficient. The lady saw that I was in a hurry on my lunch break and made sure everything was done on time. The menu is not massive but it’s quite diverse with interesting items and your usual suspects. I had a roti canai and lobak to eat in and took a nasi goreng takeaway. My roti was a bit thicker than I expected (I tend to always compare to Mamak’s roti which is my favourite) and it was a bit burned on one side but it tasted nice and it wasn’t hard. The chickpea and lentil dhal that came with it was actually sweet but again fragrant and tasty. Different to anything I have had before. It was my first time having lobak and I enjoyed it. Full of flavours and a good portion albeit a bit too salty in some parts. My nasi goreng was delicious as well. Good portions, reasonable prices. All in all, I was happy with my meals.
Flavours werent quite there. The batter on the fried chicken wasnt tasty nor crispy enough. The satay skewers were bland. Curry was ok, but rather dense. Roti bread wasnt fresh and light.
Service was redeeming.
This is a small cozy place alongside the yarra river at docklands. The ambiance was ah-mazing with its beautiful lights, lanterns and the hanging they had around the restaurant. Also, they had put these colourful lights simply on the tables outside, it seemed pretty average to the naked eye at first, but the pictures with that in the background and around definitely was stunning.
We ordered
Nasi Goreng
The blend of the fried rice, the vegetables and the spices was astounding however there were only very few pieces of chicken and i could hardly find any egg in the dish, but the overall taste of the goreng was good, so that left us with jo complaints on that dish. Also, this dish was heavy, i have an average tummy so it was quite hard for me to have my share of the dish and also hog on the other dishes.
Nasi Lemak with fried fish
It look exactly as shown n described in the menu. Loved the salter anchovies and the nuts. The dish was perfect for one person. However the fried fish seems a little undercooked, other than that it was a perfect dish.
Beef Rendang & rice
We ordered rice coz my friend wanted to have it. Personally i didnt like the combination as much, maybe the beef would have gone much better with the roti as it was mainly shredded/minced beef. Also i felt like the coconut taste in beef was overpowering its actual taste.
Coconut water wasnt fresh (the menu doesnt say anything about it, but the little chunks of coconut inside the water was a nice touch to the drink however the pineapple drink was a can drink. That was a bit disappointing
Overall the staff was very friendly, the amazing was cozy and me n my friends had an awesome time.
Ordered:
Soft shell crab curry laksa: aromatic coconut curry vermicelli noodle soup with papadum, eggplant and soft shell crab ($16.00)
Review:
A really punchy coconut flavour but after the meal it left a strange grainy texture in my mouth which I really disliked.
I laughed and loved the fact that there was only chopped up eggplants as the vegetable; at least it was sweet and delicious.
The fried papadum were crunchy and fun to eat. Savoury and crisp, it was a great way to diversify the texture in the dish and a great finisher for the meal.
Not the best soft shell crab laksa I’ve had (hellloo Laksa Bar on Little Londsdale), but on this side of the city it’s not a bad alternative.
The open environment of Bababoi was lovely on a sunny day and the inside of the restaurant was dark and cool in comparison. Overall, food well presented and not a bad place to take a work lunch.
We ordered the keluak chicken, chincalok omelette, 5 spice chicken & Babi Assam. The best I would say was the keluak chicken and chincalok omelette. 5 spice chicken was average. Tasted like normal fried chicken that over battered. Babi Assam was a little flat on taste, kind of watered down and the meat was too fibrous and dry – sort of over cooked or maybe it was overdone by a pressure cooker….so it kind of disintegrates when you eat it. Portion sizes are mostly only for 1 person – so a bit small. Service at this place was excellent though there should be better lighting for night/ evening dining as it gets too dark outside (hence our over-exposed pics) and on a warm day, too warm inside.
