Lets face it, there is not a lot happening in Fawkner in terms of the food scene outside of kebabs (and frankly there are better options for that nearby). As a result, I tend to eat at The Fork Shop when Im not in a mood to travel further.

    The positives:

Notwithstanding the neighbourhood situation – The Fork Shop has a lot to offer, with its unpretentious take on Italian food and comfortable surrounds. The staff are friendly and generally quite accommodating. Kids are well catered for and have a play kitchen to play in, which my kids enjoy and can give you a moment of peace and quiet. They also have pizza and pasta evenings which seem quite popular. The owners are welcoming hosts and there is a good family feel to the place. The Porchetta rolls on Saturday are really good.

    The negatives:

There are a few things that bother me about this place, so I dont come here as often as I used to.

Firstly, the coffee is extremely hit and miss – they really need to get that right.

Secondly – as another reviewer has noted – the value proposition doesnt feel right for the neighbourhood, particularly after the more recent changes to the menu. Pastas at a tick under $20 feel well over the odds for a local cafe in the wild outer north, and not so in keeping with the unpretentious style. When I have gone here with the entire family in the past its an expensive outing, and comparable to Lygon Street. That does not feel right to me.

Overall I find it hard to criticise The Fork Shop as there are many things theyve got right, and the owners seem like really genuine people. It is very nearly a local gem – the food is consistently good and clearly made with love. I hope they take my feedback in the spirit intended, Id like to go there more often!
