Tin Pot Cafe is an iconic Fitzroy cafe, serving a classic brunch menu as well as dinner on week days in an old double storied house. The interior is humble and soothing with an open fire and a mishmash of furniture spread out across two rooms. Tin Pot use to be my usual source of caffeine whilst in year 12 as I would study next to the window during free periods sipping on fine coffees.

It was a cold Sunday and I happened to find myself in the area when I stumbled across Tin Pot again. As soon as we walked in we where greeted by the owner and I was enthralled
to know he was still running this place. We took a spot for two next to the fire and pondered over the lengthy menu. We started with 2 long blacks to warm the soul as we took in and reminisced the times spent in this wholesome cafe. The brews where true to form, harsh and bitter, not overly impressive but still providing an enjoyable coffee.

We where ready to order after much deliberation as the menu is so diverse and hearty it is near impossible to make a decision. The waiter took our orders of the stewed fruits with muesli along with the poached special and we waited in anticipation expecting a decent comforting meal. The dishes arrived with no frills, just what the doctor ordered, showcasing fresh produce dressed up well. The poached special featuring poached eggs, sauted spinach, grilled tomatoes and mushrooms on a toasted sourdough bagel was an assemble yourself dish. The eggs oozed their gooey goodness over the crispy dense bagel. The tomatoes and mushrooms where well seasoned creating for a classic filling breakfast dish with the only regret of not adding a side of salty bacon.

The stewed fruits dish consisting of seasonal fruits poached with vanilla and spices served with vanilla yoghurt and muesli was not plated how I expected it to be. Firstly the serving size was rather small and much more yoghurt or a side of milk would have been appreciated. The vanilla yoghurt was not to sweet and when folded through the muesli it was a match made in heaven. The muesli was mostly just flakes with hardly any nuts or fruit but it was spiced nicely with cinnamon and star arise. The clear highlight was the beautifully poached pear and rhubarb that still remained a crisp texture displaying aromatic ginger syrupy tasting notes. This dish was a slight letdown but it was still very much enjoyed.

Tin Pot Cafe is ideal for family breakfasts or just coffee catch ups with friends, as the relaxing atmosphere is like no other. The food and coffee is simple yet good and the service is always sensational.
