Nice service and awesome ambience. They were a bit slow with service and forgot an item, and the baguette was stale and really hard to eat. Nonetheless, friendly staff who chatted to us and were fun, and served us nicely. Food was okay and service was okay but they were friendly. Would love to go back again at night.

Really nice place with great vibe. You can sit indoors or in the somewhat beer garden, both spots are very enjoyable. I had a good time with my white wine glass and my boyfriend’s beer was pretty well chosen as well. If you’re looking for a nice alternative vibe place to visit, search no more, this is where you wanna be!

Definitely has potential but unfortunately falls short in a few areas. The interior warm and intimate and the staff are friendly. Unfortunately the bar seems to be caught between two places. Visiting on a Friday night the inside area has no where to dance that is not in a small narrow walk way which would be completely fine is the trebly speakers from the DJ set were not blasting inside. Unfortuantely it was way too loud to talk too small to dance which puts you outside really. Unfortuately this leads to the next problem with licensing. On friday they packed up the front tables by 10 and prevented beer garden drinks by 11 forcing you back inside with the DJ. That was the time I left. If the venue can work out whether to be a lounge bar or a dance / party bar then I would give it a better rating. Drink selection was modest but appropriate for the venue. Prices were reasonable. Arrived after dinner so no opinion of the menu.

Not sure how this cafe is ‘kid friendly’, visited here on a Friday at 10.30am, sat down on a table outside, looked at the very brief menu selection and then two of my friends went up to order. Once they ordered breakfast and a coffee we were approached at our table asking to show our ID. Once i told them I was under the age of 18, I was asked to vacate the premises due to it being a licensing area. I am still to this day confused as to why a 17 year old had to leave a cafe after ordering a breakfast at 10.30am. The VIC Government State that a minor can remain on licensed premises between the hours of 7am-11pm Monday to Sunday. However the mis-hap seemed to work in our favour as we visited the cafe across the road (another licensing area) which was more than happy to cater us, and the breakfast we had was incredible.
I will most definitely not be returning to Black Cat when I am 18.

I have been coming here for the past 10 years, always enjoyed the laid back atmosphere, dj beats, outside beer garden and the random characters you meet. Even the staff have been random, I remember a guy who worked behind the bar with green hair, wearing a kimono dressing gown and a bolt piercing between his eyes – but it was great! I loved that! This is why I loved this joint, non judgmental, wear what the hell you want and it’s totally ok.
So this happened last night: I swung by with some friends of mine and while I’d normally get a beer here I decided to stick with what I had been drinking at the previous venue I was at, my usual, vodka line and soda. I asked the girl behind the bar (girl with short ear length blonde hair) what the vodka’s were like that they had there as all I could see was their house vodka (which was spelled Wodka on the bottle) and she told me there was a Tasmanian vodka and another that had a cinnamon type flavour. She told me their house vodka was good and so I ordered 2 of these. I took a sip and if I had ever had to imagine what drinking rocket fuel would taste like I would say it was pretty close to this crap. I took another sip just to make sure the fist one was indeed that crap and I went back to the bar to tell the staff that it was horrendous (it actually reminded me of that cheap ethanol vodka I had back in Ios is 2008!) So here I am, explaining to another girl behind the bar (let’s call her brunette so you’re not getting too confused here) that this was a ‘recommendation’ and that I wasn’t happy with the ‘recommendation’ and I would like to pay the difference and order the Tasmanian vodka – surely it has to be better than this – even Smirnoff would of been top shelf compared to this house crap I was served. I was told, quite rudely, that I had to still pay for that woeful thing they even call a vodka plus the 2 other I wanted to order. I pointed out the girl I had made the original order with and told her I wanted to pay the difference and get the other 2 vodka’s and she was so incredibly and disgustedly RUDE! I asked to speak to the manager in which the girl with short blonde hair said (whilst pointing her finger back and forth to the brunette) that they were both managers on duty. yeah managers – no worries love. So, brunette girl who is obviously frustrated agrees to do 2 Tasmanian vodkas for me – great I thought cause after this debacle I bloody needed it. So, while brunette girl taking my original vodka’s away I can see good old blondie swearing and using the F word to the cashier as if I can’t hear her. I confronted her about this telling her that I could hear her and she just stood there like a stunned mullet smiling in a patronizing way at me. This didn’t sit well with brunette girl so she told me she is refunding my money and that was it. Seriously, where is the customer service here and why on Earth would you expect a loyal customer to pay for something they are totally and completely unsatisfied with!! If I had drunk half and went back to complain, sure I can understand the point of charging me for the cat wee they call vodka but the glass was full I only had 2 sips!! I am extremely disappointed as I have always loved this place but I have never experienced service like this before.

Black Cat is great, and has both indoor and outdoor seating. It’s a bit loud for me in the confined interior, but sitting outside is really lovely and lively.

The beating heart of Fitzroy, it’s quite bewildering to see how the level of ultra hip has exasperated over the fallen years.
A really chilled share house vibe is ensured when grazing on the hard rubbish couches inside or shaded green tables outside.
I noticed that more orderly, art pieces have replaced the glass framed, insect specimens that were most memorable to me years ago.
There’s quite a thoughtful list of local brews, popular cocktails and tasty nibbles to mull over.
Black Cat’s a true gem that gels together the many evolving sub-cultures from past and future generations.
