I went here for lunch with a few friends and had a great time. The food was overall pretty good, and they have a HUGE selection of vegan options which is great. It did take pretty long for us to get our food even though the restaurant was almost empty at the time, but I was told this was due to a lot of orders coming in through online meal delivery services right before we ordered. My favourite dishes were the vegan chicken and waffles and the vegan ESP, however the mac n cheese did let me down slightly, I wish it had a bit more flavour! *Sponsored free meal
We were invited to Evies last night and I definitely appreciated the unique atmosphere. It offers American style diner food in an 80s style disco environment, mirror balls and all. They cater to their environment being located in Fitzroy and having a menu that is quite vegan friendly (but dont worry you can get real meat too).
You order at the counter and we began with a sav blac (also vegan) and a Reeces pieces shake. The shake I found was quite bland lacking a strong peanut flavour. The food came out relatively quickly and we had the vegan eggplant wedges, chicken and waffles, shoestring fries, chicken burger and the Philly cheesesteak bowl.
The burger was just average for me with a high bun ratio and a bun that was a little too charred. The chicken and waffles werent bad but definitely had too much maple on them. The cheesesteak bowl was a little disappointing in that the meat lacked flavour and the sweet potato fries it came with were definitely undercooked.
We hoped to fare better with deserts and ordered cinnamon doughnuts and blueberry bread and butter pudding. We were effectively served two Coles doughnuts with some icy chocolate ice cream and while the doughnuts tasted good you kind of expect more then that at a restaurant. The bread and butter pudding again had unbalanced ratios. It would have fared better had the blueberries been inside rather than heaped on top. Atmosphere is one thing but the food failed to impress
On Friday night we headed north side to check out @eviesdiscodiner. Super cute interior with disco balls, funky lighting, retro tunes and old school games. DJ playing during the night and loads of people dancing. Plenty of seating catering for couples and larger groups – really popular with the uni crowd so we recommend you book on the weekends.
The menu is American diner themed, really well priced and has a good range of delish cocktails – we had the choc orange espresso martini which was fantastic and totally tasted like chocolate orange (see pic). You order at the bar, service is pretty efficient and the meals didn’t take too long to come out.
The menu is super vegan friendly which made me so excited to be able to order loaded fries with mac and cheese. I was even able to order vegan milk shakes (which you can have spiked if you like) and the most amazing vegan chocolate mousse! You seriously will not be able to tell.
It has a multi level interior and a small courtyard out the back so can cater for parties and events. A fun idea for you next date night, plus it’s family friendly.
We ordered the Choc espresso martini | cheese burger | vegan loaded mac and cheese fries | vegan choc mousse |vegan burger | cinnamon donut with eggnog and choc ice-cream
Booked Evies’s Disco Diner based on reviews and the theme….
Seated at a bar table with stools, there was no music and hardly any seating.
Apparently Friday is trivia night? Great to find out when you arrive.
No table service – order at the bar, everytime you want something situation.
Went to order a Pina Colada – no pineapple.
We took our party of 7 elsewhere
Had high hopes for this place, wasn’t even a staff member in sight!
2.5 The food was decent, with ample options for the vegans in our group. We ordered the mac and cheese which was tasty and gooey, deep fried pickles which had excellent dipping sauce and the loaded tots which were meh.
The service was a let down with our food coming before the cocktails we ordered. I had to remind them of our drinks order, a small issue and forgivable if busy, but the place was almost empty. I loved the decor but overall the whole venue was a bit sticky and dingy.
