This place is fantastic for a little slice of Spain outside of Europe. The tapas was amazing, the sangria fab but most of all the flamenco was excellence personified. Guitarist professional and jazzed it up just a little. The dancers incredible and percussionist on task. What an amazing troupe. Id recommend to anyone who loves anything Andalucian.

Enjoyed catching up with some friends on a Friday night at Kanela. Parking depends on your luck, was very busy. Friendly service, lovely ambience. Food was ok. Tapas bar food, tried a few different things, but all very average. The chicken seafood paella was nice. You can order minimum 2 person serve. Sangria was lovely. We also watched the flamenco show at 9.30pm. It was done by a team of 4 ppl. It was intense serious flamenco music and dance for about 45 minutes.

This place was fantastic! Dined there for my birthday with a large group, and if they were under pressure because of all the different orders, they certainly didn’t show it. Our waiter was fantastic and extremely accommodating, offering lots of suggestions and recommendations. The food was wonderful, the vibe is fun and relaxed, and the service was fantastic. Will absolutely be back… can’t wait to come to the flamenco show one evening!

I’ve got to say, with some disappointment, that the night we attended Kanela not all of the food we ordered was up to scratch.

Feeling like some Spanish grub, we felt we would be pretty safe at this Johnston Street establishment which I believe has been around for a while.

Some of the flavours were good – the skewers/kebabs were tender and the calamari was ok, but some of the other tapas not so much. The prawns were really nicely seasoned and packed full of tang and flavour, but once shelled the flavour was completely shelled with it.

The potatoes drizzled with aioli really were not good. Bland, tasted pre-packaged. Probably most disappointing was the chocolate mud cake dessert. The cake itself was generic, but worst of all it was served with mock cream. Yes – mock cream. It gives me no joy to say so but that is really lazy.

The bill we racked up was not insubstantial, so I can’t put this down to being a cheap and cheerful Spanish place. The people that work at this place seemed friendly and it’s possible that the tapas we had were not their best (and that we caught them on a bad night) – perhaps when the Spanish dancing is on the entire experience is that much better.

We went sat night the show was great but the rest abit average. It was a set menu and we were 4 people. We got less food than what 2 ppl got beside us, we got 2 scewers and we had to half them we got less chorizo then te 2 and our paella was burnt. That was 60 dollars a head

In this cosy Fitzroy restaurant Spanish food was pleasure and then join it with good company, sangria and flamingo dance and it became festive. A must try. Couldn’t stop reminiscing of my trip to Spain.
